When evaluating defensive players, most fantasy owners rely on one stat above all others: tackles. While sacks or interceptions (not to mention touchdowns) might be worth more fantasy points, those numbers are too volatile to be counted on, both from game to game and from season to season. Tackles, on the other hand, are at least somewhat reliable.
Unfortunately, most of the league’s top tacklers are linebackers, making it difficult to fill the other defensive spots. With only a handful of defensive backs and linemen posting solid tackle numbers, a player like Adam Archuleta can be a highly valuable asset.
Archuleta may not receive as much press as a Brian Urlacher or a Derrick Brooks, but the Rams’ first-round pick in 2001 has turned into a very solid defender. His 102 solo tackles last season are excellent for a DB, and he’ll also give you an occasional sack (3 in 2002) or interception (1). This season, he’ll once again play a key role anchoring St. Louis’ defense.
When it’s time to choose a defensive back, let others pick up flashy cornerbacks. Go with a dependable strong safety who will contribute week in and week out. Go with a player like Adam Archuleta.
