Sleeper Watch

By Arlo Vander

With the Stephen Davis era having abruptly come to an end in Washington, the door may be open for sophomore Ladell Betts to take over starter duties. Betts didn’t see much action last season, carrying for 307 yards on just 65 carries, but he did have time to learn the playbook and could be a productive rusher in given the chance. Hopefully this familiarity with Steve Spurrier’s offense schemes will also lead to Betts playing a significant role in Washington’s passing game.

While Betts might not be able to carry your team, he shouldn’t be overlooked. While Kenny Watson is also in the mix, more and more signs point to Betts as the starter in 2004. If he’s still the frontrunner on your league’s draft day, consider drafting him as your third or even second runningback and enjoy the ride. If he impresses as a starter, you could have a gem in keeper leagues.

Of course, you’ll still have to watch Washington’s offseason moves, particularly the upcoming draft, but the Redskins seem to have more pressing needs than drafting a rusher. If you’re drafting early, Betts is definitely worth a late flyer.
