Sleeper Watch

By Arlo Vander

Charles Rogers, Andre Johnson, Kelley Washington… if you’re in a league that holds its rookie draft prior to the upcoming NFL draft, those are probably the wide receivers you’ve been keeping an eye on. But don’t forget about Middle Tennessee State’s Tyrone Calico.

Calico’s game is all about speed. His ability to beat defenders at the line of scrimmage and his potential to rack up yards after the catch are already excellent; if he can learn to run routes more effectively and become an active rather than passive receiver, his natural athletic ability will make him a very dangerous offensive weapon.

Although he was originally projected as a second-rounder, we feel the Tennesse Titans may well go with Calico if Washington is off the board when their first-round pick comes up. Not only did Calico, like Washington, play college ball in Tennessee, but he would also be a very nice fit in the Titans’ offense and provide the explosive speed they’ve been lacking.

Calico hasn’t been receiving all that much media attention, but he could wind up being a nice addition to your fantasy squad nonetheless, at a price far lower that the other WR’s mentioned. If you can afford to be patient with him, perhaps leaving Calico on the bench at first and shifting him into your starting lineup later in the year, he could turn into a very solid bargain.
