The fact that Robert Ferguson is battling with Javon Walker for the WR spot opposite Donald Driver in Green Bay makes him an important player to watch this offseason. Thanks to the presence of Brett Favre at quarterback, any receiver starting in this offense should have significant fantasy value.
Ferguson had a couple of nice games last year in his second season in the NFL, but was never able to lock up a starting spot, eventually being beaten out by rookie Javon Walker. However, the position is again up for grabs and there is a good chance Ferguson will come out on top this time around.
After appearing in just one game in his rookie season, Ferguson had 22 catches for 293 yards and three touchdowns in 2002, numbers similar to those put up by Walker (23 catches for 319 yards and a TD). But Ferguson came on strong last year and seems to be carrying the momentum into the new season, while Walker still a bit raw on occasion.
Follow this position battle closely and be prepared to take a chance on Ferguson somewhere in the middle rounds if he wins the starting nod. Also keep in mind that the Packers might still add a veteran WR who could also be a factor. Still, Ferguson may have the biggest upside of any Green Bay receiver not named Driver; so far, he appears very well prepared to make an impact in his third NFL season.
