David Terrell hasn’t exactly taken the league by storm since being drafted eighth overall by Chicago in 2001, amassing only 542 yards so far in his pro career. Now, the former first round pick is coming off foot surgery and has to compete with rookie Justin Gage for the Bears’ third wide receiver spot. Doesn’t sound very promising?
Maybe not, but we feel Terrell may be worth a second look. He’s a big target for QB Kordell Stewart – assuming Stewart holds on to the job – and he will be dangerous in the red zone. In the five games he played last season Terrell scored three touchdowns, a number which should increase this year. His average of 14.1 yards per catch isn’t bad, either.
Watch what happens at Chicago’s camps, and if Terrell keeps his job and Stewart gets the passing game going, you might just have a nice sleeper to bolster your bench in the later rounds of the draft. When the pickings get thin and teams start drafting their second kickers, a receiver who can catch a few can be a very decent pickup.
