Sleeper Watch

By Arlo Vander

Chiefs strong safety Greg Wesley picked off a career high six passes last season, but in most scoring formats, he was nonetheless a fantasy disappointment. With only 54 solo tackles in 13 games (compared with 76 and 74 the previous two seasons), Wesley’s overall production was down, causing him to remain undrafted in many leagues.

This year, however, Wesley’s tackles are up again. Through the first six weeks of the season, the Arkansas-Pine Bluff alum has already amassed 37 solo tackles (second among defensive backs behind Buffalo’s Antoine Wingfield) and 6 assists, and added a pair of interceptions as well. With solid production from the DB position so hard to come by, Wesley may be worth considering if he remains on your league’s waiver wire.

What’s the catch? Consistency. While Wesley’s overall numbers are solid, he’s been hot and cold all season. Three times he has finished a game with four tackles or less, three times with eight or more, including a season-high 11 at Green Bay.

Still, you can’t have everything. Greg Wesley should continue to be a solid fantasy contributor at a shallow position this season. If you wrote him off after last season’s letdown, give him another look.
