Week 3

By Charles Budd & Steve Maluk

This is a computerized ranking system created by Charles Budd and Steve Maluk (known in the Forums as Buckychudd and Wesley Walker). Factors taken into account include past performance of players and opposing defenses. Players listed as “out” or “doubtful” are not included.

Point projections are based on the following scoring system: 1 point per 25 yards passing or 10 yards rushing/receiving; 6 points per TD; -1 per fumble; -2 per interception thrown.

QUARTERBACK
Minnesota’s Daunte Culpepper is the best bet at quarterback once again, despite the fact that he’s virtually a lock to fumble at least once. Elsewhere, watch out for Jake Plummer, who goes up against a soft San Diego defense. Trent Green remains a question mark, but if he’s ever going to get rolling this season, it’s going to start against Houston.

RUNNING BACK
The theme for the week is injuries. I’d be watching the news right up until kick-off this week for updates on Priest Holmes, Edgerrin James, and Warrick Dunn. Deuce McAllister is out this week, despite being listed as “questionable” on the official mid-week injury report for some reason.

Dom Davis and Jamal Lewis have favorable matchups this week, but people will question Lewis’s value until he gets something going this year.

WIDE RECEIVER
Did you like the Terrell and Randy show on Monday night? I sure did, though I thought McNabb was the difference in the game. Right now, Terrell Owens is the best fantasy receiver in football. I guess we needn’t wonder any longer how he’ll fit in with the Eagles.

The Colts are allowing the most fantasy points by opposing receivers to date. This bodes well for Javon Walker. Dallas and Houston lead the league in touchdowns allowed to opponents’ wide receivers at four each. Lavernues Coles could benefit and Johnnie Morton, whose Chiefs face Houston, could also emerge as a fantasy value.

TIGHT END
Eric Johnson continues to improve and impress. The Niners may struggle to keep pace with Seattle’s offense this week and would be forced to throw the ball often in that scenario. LJ Smith has proved himself a valuable red-zone target for Philly, and Antonio Gates appears to be one of the better receiving options in San Diego.
