Sleeper Watch

He may only have caught 24 balls last season, but Antonio Gates could be ready to come into his own in 2004.

After signing with San Diego as an undrafted free agent out of Kent State, Gates spent the first half of the 2003 campaign learning the ropes, making just three receptions in the Chargers’ first eight games (and losing a fumble). He came on strong down the stretch, however, gaining 351 yards and finding the end zone twice from week ten onward, highlighted by an impressive 117-yard effort against Green Bay. His confidence seemed to increase from game to game, as did his role in the offensive game plan.

No matter whether Drew Brees or rookie Philip Rivers is behind center, San Diego’s tight end should receive plenty of looks this season. Gates has both the frame and the speed to succeed at the position, and with Stephen Alexander now in Detroit, he should find himself with every opportunity to make an impact and continue to improve his game.

If you’re not planning on spending an early pick on one of the league’s elite pass-catching TEs, consider targeting Antonio Gates in the late rounds. He might not be able to post Tony Gonzalez-esque numbers, but could well be a solid fantasy contributor and a good value pick.
