Sleeper Watch

By Arlo Vander

Heading into the season, Cato June’s name couldn’t be found on many IDP cheat sheets. After all, the sixth-round pick out of Michigan had seen only limited action as David Thornton’s backup in 2003, recording just six tackles and two assists in 11 games. But what a difference a year makes…

This year, thanks to both the offseason departure of Marcus Washington and his considerable run-stopping ability, June has earned a starting linebacker assignment in Indianapolis. Following a somewhat slow start (15 tackles in his first four games), the former safety has become a key component of the Colts’ defense, and has been posting solid fantasy numbers as well. In week 5 against Oakland, he recorded a career high nine tackles and also picked off his first pass. After the Colts’ week 6 bye, June overcame a minor shoulder injury to pick up seven tackles and two assists in his team’s loss to Jacksonville.

How will Cato June fare over the rest of the season? It’s a bit too early to tell whether his production will remain at its current level, but he’s certainly come a long way from merely backing up Thornton. If you’re looking to bolster your linebacking corps and all the big names are already taken, consider giving June a shot.
