Sleeper Watch

Kellen Winslow, Jr. might be receiving most of the attention, but don’t forget about Ben Troupe when looking for a young tight end for your keeper or dynasty league.

Following an excellent college career capped by a 638-yard, five-touchdown senior campaign, Troupe will likely be selected in the opening round of the upcoming NFL draft. With speed, size (6′4″, 265 pounds), excellent instincts, and great hands, it’s no wonder that scouts expect good things from the Florida alum.

How soon he makes an impact in the pro game depends highly on the team he winds up playing for. Denver and St. Louis seem to be the early favorites, and both would be good spots for a young TE to land. In particular, having the opportunity to learn from veteran Shannon Sharpe in Denver would benefit Troupe greatly.

With the emergence of impact tight ends such as Tony Gonzalez and Todd Heap, the position can no longer be dismissed as a fantasy afterthought. Instead, shrewd owners will begin planning for the future now, and that future may well be Ben Troupe.
