Sleeper Watch

In this year’s draft class, when you think ‘Williams,’ you automatically think wide receiver. And USC’s Mike, Texas’ Roy, and Washington’s Reggie are truly a phenomenal trio who should all be chosen in the top half of the first round, and go on to make an impact in the NFL for many years to come. But amid the justified hype surrounding these three WRs, don’t forget about Miami’s DJ Williams, a highly talented linebacker who could become a solid contributor in your IDP league.

Williams has all the tools to succeed in the NFL, combining speed, strength, good size, and excellent anticipation. His coverage and tackling skills are already top-notch; if he can now improve his concentration and ability to evade blockers, Williams could develop into a star.

No matter which team drafts him on April 24 (Indianapolis, Carolina, New England, Minnesota, Philadelphia, and possibly even the New York Jets at #12 are all among the large number of teams he might land with), it may take some time before Williams’ raw athleticism translates into consistent production at the pro level. He may be best left on the bench by fantasy owners in the first half of the 2004 campaign, but could be a valuable starter by the time the playoffs roll around. Above all, his high potential makes DJ Williams well worth considering in keeper leagues featuring individual defensive players.
