Heading into Sunday’s games, Tyrone Wheatley owners had every reason to be optimistic. The previous week, their back had rushed for 102 yards and a score on 18 carries (5.7 yards per attempt) against Tampa Bay. With the Texans on the schedule this weekend, it looked like Oakland would again be able to move the ball on the ground. And that’s exactly what happened – but it wasn’t Wheatley who benefited.
The day began well enough for Wheatley, who gained 27 yards on his first three carries and also added two receptions. Unfortunately, he suffered a shoulder injury in the second quarter and had to make way for Amos Zereoue, who proceeded to make the most of the opportunity. Zereoue carried the ball 14 times, racking up 117 yards for an average of 8.4 yards per attempt and scoring both of Oakland’s touchdowns, including an impressive 55-yard scramble.
Whether Wheatley’s injury will cause him to miss additional time remains to be seen; if he does spend time on the shelf, Zereoue could be a productive fill-in. The sixth-year pro has proven himself capable of shouldering the load when given the chance, posting solid numbers – both rushing and receiving – as Jerome Bettis’ understudy in Pittsburgh. Will he have the opportunity to see further action as Oakland’s feature back? It’s too early to say, but if you have the roster space, picking him up just in case can’t hurt. Just keep an eye on Wheatley’s status.
