Sleeper Watch

By Arlo Vander

What’s more frustrating: playing wide receiver for the Buffalo Bills or owning quarterback JP Losman in a fantasy league? Buffalo’s air attack is sputtering with just 119 passing yards per game (the second-lowest mark in the league) and only one touchdown through the first three weeks, and much of the blame is being laid squarely on Losman’s shoulder pads.

The Bills drafted Losman in the first round of the 2004 draft to be their quarterback of the future, but if he continues to make as many mistakes as he has in the last two weeks, the team may lose patience faster than you can say “48.1% completion percentage.”

Should Losman find himself on the bench, former Brown Kelly Holcomb would receive the opportunity to start, and it’s intriguing to wonder what the veteran could do in this situation. He’d certainly have plenty of weapons, including tried-and-true Eric Moulds and talented Lee Evans as targets, as well as a Willis McGehee-led ground game more than capable of keeping defenses honest.

Losman still has time to right his ship, and should have an easier time this Sunday when the Bills face the Saints than he did the last two weeks, when Buffalo ran into Tampa Bay and Atlanta. Yet in case his struggles continue, owners looking for help at the QB position could do worse than to have Holcomb stashed on their benches, waiting to step in when the time comes.
