For years, fantasy owners have wondered what kind of numbers LaMont Jordan could put up if only he were a starter. This season, we’ll finally have the chance to find out: after four years of backup duty with the New York Jets, Jordan will have a chance to shine as Oakland’s feature back.
While spelling veteran Curtis Martin in New York, Jordan turned into one of the league’s premier #2 RBs, averaging 4.9 yards per carry over four seasons. With his strong, physical style, he served as the ideal complement to Martin. It remains to be seen whether he can withstand the wear and tear of carrying the ball twenty times a game, of course, but the odds look to be in his favor.
Oakland’s revamped passing game will certainly prevent opponents from concentrating solely on stopping the Raiders’ ground attack. With Randy Moss and Jerry Porter creating havoc in opposing backfields, Jordan should find plenty of holes to exploit.
Last year, Oakland’s running game – led by Amos Zereoue and Tyrone Wheatley – finished dead last in the NFL with just 1295 yards gained, less than half the total of league leader Atlanta. This year, with Jordan in the saddle and defenses focusing on containing Moss, that should change in a hurry.
