Since entering the league as an undrafted free agent out of Stanford in 2002, Donnie Spragan’s playing time and numbers have both steadily increased. Last year, he recorded 48 tackles, 20 assists and a sack, a far cry from the 12.5 tackles he posted in his rookie campaign, yet not enough to warrant fantasy consideration in all but the very deepest IDP leagues. He might be worth a look this year, however.
After three years in Denver, Spragan has signed with Miami, where he will be expected to replace Morlon Greenwood, who recently packed his bags for Houston. Greenwood played a considerable role in the Dolphins’ defense last year, enjoying the best season of his four-year career as he posted 81 tackles and 27 assists, and Spragan ought to see similar action.
The change of scenery could help Spragan in two ways: not only should his playing time increase, but he will also be suiting up for a defense that sees considerably more action than his former team’s. In 2004, Miami’s defense spent an average of 4:17 more on the field than Denver’s defenders, allowing the Dolphins’ opponents to run 10% more plays than teams playing the Broncos. That’s quite a lot of opportunities to make plays and rack up stats on the defensive side of the football.
If you’re looking for an IDP sleeper to bolster your linebacking corps this season and don’t wish to put your faith in undrafted rookies, keep an eye on Donnie Spragan. This may be the year he cracks the fantasy threshold and becomes worthy of a roster spot.
