Welcome to another week of Waiver Wire Work. Solid pickups from the wire during the season can make a huge difference to a fantasy football team, and turn a pretender into a contender overnight. With that in mind, here are some of the top candidates to check out on the waiver wire this week.
WR Pickups (Immediate)
Reggie Brown (Phi) – News came down Monday that shook the pillars of the fantasy football world: Terrell Owens had played his last game as an Eagle. Brown came up with a big game for the Eagles this past weekend in place of the suspended Owens. While it’s absurd to expect that type of production from him on a weekly basis, Donovan McNabb seems to have confidence in this rookie.
Greg Lewis (Phi) – See Reggie Brown. Lewis is the elder statesman of the receiving corps and should also benefit from no more TO in this offense. I would expect Lewis to be a bit more steady in his performances with his NFL experience.
Bobby Engram(Sea) – The Seahawks didn’t pass much against the Cardinals this past weekend, but Engram was the second-most targetted Seahawk. As he rounds back into form, those numbers should continue to get better.
Antonio Chatman (GB) – Chatman and the Packers faced a tough Pittsburgh defense this Sunday and he still performed well. Robert Ferguson still looks to be out at least one more week, so Chatman should continue to be a solid pickup.
Amani Toomer (NYG) – There is no doubt that Toomer has slid down the food chain a bit in New York, but don’t be surprised if his numbers start to climb over the next few games as the Giants get into the meat of their schedule.
Bryant Johnson (Ari) – Johnson put up some pretty decent fantasy numbers this past weekend in the absence of Anquan Boldin. It sounds like Boldin is out for at least another week, and we all know that the Cards love to throw the ball around.
Scott Vines (Det) – Vines has had a superb two week run for Detroit. The Lions are continuing to battle a rash of injuries at the RB and WR positions which is leaving them shorthanded. Until the rest of the WR corps gets healthy, Vines is starting to look like a decent play.
Ernest Wilford (Jax) – All Wilford has done since being inserted into the starting lineup is perform, and head coach Jack Del Rio has rewarded him by naming him a starter.
Brian Finneran (Atl) – It’s hard to get excited about a Falcons starting WR, but Finneran appears to have emerged as the top receiving prospect for Atlanta this year. If Vick is turning the corner as a passer, Finneran may become more valuable.
WR Pickups (Worth a Look)
Keary Colbert (Car) – Colbert had one catch this weekend. I hate to sound redundant, but how long can the Panthers simply rely on one WR?
Braylon Edwards (Cle) – Edwards has moved himself into a starting lineup rotation for the Browns. Look for more and better things to come for Edwards as the season wears on and he gets more playing time.
Robert Ferguson (GB) – Reports are is that Ferguson is not quite ready to come back yet, but he’s also not that far away. He would be a good guy to pick up now and stash.
Brandon Jones (Ten) – Jones was playing well for the Titans prior to his injury. Jones should continue to start once he is healthy and should continue to produce in this offense.
Courtney Roby (Ten) – Roby, much like his teammate Jones, has been productive for the Titans this year. Even when Drew Bennett comes back into the starting lineup, expect Roby to get solid playing time.
RB Pickups (Immediate)
Samkon Gado (GB) – Green Bay’s RB position has been a revolving door this year, to say the least. Gado is the latest back to step into this position, and he came up with a nice game against a stout defense. If Tony Fisher can’t go for the Packers, look for Gado to continue to be the main guy.
Marion Barber III (Dal) – There’s no official word out of Dallas yet as to whether or not Julius Jones will be ready to go or not this weekend. Barber should be, though. It also will be interesting to see Barber’s new role in the offense after showcasing his talents so well in Jones’ absence.
Cedric Benson (Chi) – Thomas Jones has gotten himself nicked up the past couple of weeks, and Benson has come in and performed well in his stead. There is a chance that Jones may not be able to go this weekend. If he can’t, Benson would be the starter.
Jonathon Wells (Hou) – Dom Davis was a late-week injury scratch for the Texans. Wells played well in his place. If Davis can’t go again, Wells should see the majority of the work for the Texans.
Greg Jones (Jax) – Fred Taylor aggravated his injured ankle this past weekend and is having tests done on it this week to see the extent of the damage. Jones would probably see the bulk of the work for the Jaguars if Taylor can’t go.
Duce Staley (Pit) – Staley came up with a big game for the Steelers this week when Willie Parker went out with an injury. Early on, it looks like both Jerome Bettis and Parker are questionable for the week, so Staley should see alot of work again.
Ricky Williams (Mia) – Ricky scored his first TD of the year on Sunday and had a pretty nice game for the Dolphins. He still appears to be getting less reps in the starting offense than Ronnie Brown, but he is starting to show some signs of life.
Michael Bennett (Min) – Mewelde Moore left this week’s game with an injured wrist and Bennett responded with 100 yards and a TD. Moore may not be able to play next week; if he can’t, Bennett should be the main guy there.
Artrose Pinner (Det) – It looks like Kevin Jones is banged up for the Lions, and if he can’t go, Pinner should see the majority of the work.
QB Pickups (Immediate)
Brad Johnson (Min) – Johnson came right out of the gate this past weekend with a solid two-TD performance. If you are hurting, he looks to be a nice pickup.
David Carr (Hou) – Carr turned in a very respectable performance against a tough Jaguars defense. He has played pretty well over the last couple of weeks, and getting Andre Johnson back should only help.
Brooks Bollinger (NYJ) – Bollinger played well in relief of Vinny Testaverde. He has been named the starter for this weekend’s game against the Panthers.
Kurt Warner (Ari) – Warner passed for over 300 yards and a TD for the Cardinals on Sunday afternoon, but also threw three interceptions. The QB position in Arizona has value – it’s just a matter of who will be playing that position.
QB Pickups (Worth a look)
Kyle Boller (Bal) – Boller is back and will start for the Ravens this weekend.
Kicker Pickups (Immediate)
Lawrence Tynes (KC) – He has been awesome so far this year, hitting everything in sight the last few weeks.
Josh Brown (Sea) – He hit a couple more field goals in his latest outing but missed an extra point. Still, he should be solid.
David Akers (Phi) – He finally made it back from his injury. Although he doesn’t look 100%, he should still be able to cash in on opportunities for this offense.
TE Pickups (Immediate)
Heath Miller (Pit) – He cooled off a bit this Sunday, but he’s still an every-week guy.
Erron Kinney (Ten) – Kinney had a great week for the Titans. He’s turing into an every-week kind of guy, too.
Defensive Pickups (Immediate)
Denver – The Broncos defense is coming off a bye week.
NY Giants – The Giants continue to play good, aggressive defense.
