January Mock Draft

Off-season? What off-season? Super Bowl XL may still lie ahead of us, but for some owners, the 2006 fantasy football season has already begun. One such group, the members of the Sam Mills Dynasty League, recently held its inaugural draft at the Cafe. For a sneak preview of what the upcoming season might hold in store, let’s take a look at the results.

Keep in mind that this is a dynasty league, in which all players on a team’s roster may be retained from one season to the next. Therefore, young players with the potential to carry a team for many years were at a premium, while veterans who might have one or two more good years ahead of them tended to slip. It’s interesting to compare strategies between owners with a win-now phuilosophy and those who attempted to build for the future. Also note the deep 13-man bench, which most drafters filled with up-and-comers and high-risk, high-reward players. Backup RBs, in particular, were a popular choice to fill those bench slots.

As with any mock draft, the drafters’ preferences and team needs obviously play a role in their respective choices, and the spot where a player is selected might therefore vary from where you might expect to find him on a cheat sheet compiled outside of actual draft conditions.
