2007 NFL Week 6 Barometer

By Scott Fish

The top five teams in this week’s Barometer were jumbled a bit, however, no teams left the group. Another week went by and the Patriots and Colts are still making playing ball in the NFL look too easy, while other teams are making it look near impossible. See where our rankers placed the teams in the Week 6 version of the NFL Barometer.

The Pats dispatched of the Browns with another 30+ point day. The Pats are progressively allowing more and more points to opponents over the last 3 weeks, but I don’t think that is a concern for them. They never let anyone get close enough to actually take a win away. Indianapolis took out the running back deficient Buccaneers last week in convincing fashion. Rookie running back Kenton Keith ran for 121 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Thus proving once again that, as long as Peyton is there, the Colts can line just about anyone up in that backfield and get results. Dallas, who looked like the team to beat in the NFC during the last couple weeks, pulled out an amazing last second victory Monday night. It was one of the best last 5 minutes of a game I have seen in awhile. Buffalo should have won that game, but the Cowboys found a way. That is what championship caliber teams do. Fellow NFC top 5 team Green Bay struggled and lost against the division rival Bears. The Packers are my 2nd favorite team, however I have believed all season that their record is a mirage. Have they begun to be exposed? The coming weeks will tell. They do have a very talented, young team. I just don’t think they have the metal to beat any of the teams they are ranked closely with. The Pittsburgh Steelers shut out a top ten team from last week’s Barometer this week in the Seahawks. Pittsburgh had their best two wide receivers out for the game. This didn’t hurt them as much as it would for most teams because they are a run first team. Willie Parker and Najeh Davenport combined for 160 yards and 2 scores. Is there a team that can break up this group next week?

After each week of the NFL season, several active Cafe members get together and rank the 32 NFL teams from first to worst. The Barometer is an average of the rankings submitted by these members. To maintain consistency, the high and low scores have been removed.

upIndianapolis1.5221212123111

The Colts have retaken their place atop the Barometer. They have a bye this week, but that is no guarantee that they will keep hold of their piece of number 1.

1 (1)

upNew England1.5111121232122

This upcoming week will be the first of 2 very big games for the Patriots. They face the 5-0 Cowboys. Then, in week 9 they travel to Indy to face Peyton & Co.

3 (3)

upDallas3.2433443311344

The Cowboys may have been looking forward to their showdown against the Pats next week instead of worrying about the Bills. They were lucky to escape that game with a win. If those kind of mistakes show themselves against New England, the game won’t be close.

4 (5)

upPittsburgh3.6344334444433

Defense and a running game. Although it’s not a surefire way to win a championship, it is a good way to win a lot of games.

5 (4)

upGreen Bay5.9555655655998

The Pack drop back a spot after losing to the Bears. This was a game they should have won. Dallas beat the Bears handily, and they are only ranked a couple spots ahead of the Pack.

6 (8)

downTennessee6.77891079566555

The Titans have finally been getting some love from the Cafe rankers the last 2 weeks. They only beat the Falcons, but other teams have been hot and cold. The Titans have only lost once, and that was a 2 point loss handed to them by the Colts. That is almost something to be proud of.

7 (12)

upWashington7.714965871177787

The ‘Skins just keep climbing and climbing up the rankings. They have quietly earned a 3-1 record. Their defense has been flying under the radar. They have allowed a mere 52 points this season. That is 2nd in the NFL behind the Jaguars.

8 (13)

upJacksonville8.2868811121689666

What a division the AFC South has turned out to be. The division is the best in the NFL with a 14-4 record. Every team has a winning record. Their defense is allowing just over 10 points per game, and like the Redskins, the rankers are noticing. They jump 5 more spots this week.

9 (11)

downBaltimore9.513713913679881110

After losing badly to the Browns a week ago, the Ravens took home a win this week. In a low scoring battle, they failed to score a touchdown and only have 5 offensive touchdowns on the season.

10 (6)

downSeattle10.612121076810151013159

Seattle drops a few places after being beaten by one of the AFC’s best. Branch being injured could be costly.

11 (16)

upSan Diego10.861017119118121514711

The Chargers jump back up the rankings with a decisive win against the Broncos. San Diego finally looked more like the team of their 2006 campaign. Are they back?

12 (16)

downNY Giants11.8101314131010171313101012

Plaxico is a beast and Jacobs is up and running. That combo could start to prove pretty potent down the line.

13 (14)

upHouston13.1111611141414121411111416

The Texans move up a spot after beating the Dolphins. This team went from 2 wins in 2005 to 6 wins in 2006. They already have 3 wins this year and smart money has them beating their win total from last season. This team is slowly on the rise.

14 (7)

upTampa Bay14.69177121218202116161214

The Bucs drop a whopping 7 spots this week after losing to the Colts. I don’t understand that. This is about where I rank them, but why did rankers move them down so much after losing to the number 1 team. It should have been expected, right?

15 (19)

downArizona15.1161112182013181119151318

The Cards have lost Matt Leinart for the season. The funny thing is that this might be a good thing for the team. A quarterback carousel was not the answer. Now they can focus on Warner being the guy.

16 (9)

downDetroit16.2201516151615151617201715

The Lions were exposed after the Eagles put up 56 on them. Now teams are just piling on. They have allowed 155 points to be scored on them this season, 117 of them in the last 3 weeks. It’s a good thing the Lions have a good offense and can score, otherwise they wouldn’t win another game.

17 (15)

upCarolina16.3181415171519132312122317

Carolina barely got past the winless Saints. In fairness to the Panthers, they have been riddled with injuries and the Saints played much better than they have so far this year.

18 (20)

upChicago17.415212119192291014171919

Did the Bears pull themselves out of their funk last weekend by beating an undefeated Packers team? Did they just expose the Packers as an overrated team? Will the Bears ever get a franchise quarterback again? Do I ask too many rhetorical questions? My money is on No, Yes, No, Yes.

19 (9)

downDenver17.8172323161716142218191613

The Broncos have free fallen 10 spots after being destroyed by the Chargers. You could argue that the last two losses were against very good teams. However, that doesn’t change the number in the loss column.

20 (18)

upCincinnati19.5192226221817191920181820

The Bengals took the week off so that Chad Johnson could choreograph a new endzone dance. At least that’s what I’m hoping.

21 (21)

upOakland20.8222018252120231721212022

The Raiders also took the week off. They get Dominic Rhodes back this week. It’ll be interesting to watch him for the first time since the Superbowl.

22 (24)

downCleveland22.3211920212523242026232521

Cleveland’s offense just knows how to go. Unfortunately their defense doesn’t know how to stop.

23 (23)

upPhiladelphia22.7232524242321211822222225

The Eagles gave Westbrook a week to get healthy and their ranking stayed the same. They face the 1-4 Jets this week.

24 (22)

downSan Francisco23.5282622202225252423242123

The 49ers are just hurting. I know they played the Ravens, but I just don’t like what I see out of that offense.

25 (25)

downKansas City24.3271819262624262524252424

I wonder if the Chiefs are regretting giving Larry Johnson all that money right now. Then again, I’m not sure LT on Merriman’s steroids could run behind that line.

26 (26)

downMinnesota25.6262725232726222625262626

The Vikings play the Bears this week. If Childress does what he did last in week 4 with Adrian Peterson, I am starting a “Fire Chilly” campaign. Stop having him return kicks and give him more than 2 carries in the 2nd half. Your playcalling suggests to me that you are throwing the season in favor of a high draft pick.

27 (31)

upBuffalo27.6252429302427322827292730

Buffalo and their 31st ranked (prior to last week) pass defense managed to intercept Tony Romo 5 times. I’m not sure how good they are, but they deserved to win that game. They deserve the 4 spot bump in the rankings.

28 (27)

upNY Jets27.9242828272828272928283128

The Jets are not looking good this year. I hope this is finally the year that they realize Penny is not the answer.

29 (28)

upNew Orleans29.1293032283030283030272927

The Saints showed signs of the 2006 team last week. However, they still lost.

Joey Harrington, 87 yards on 31 attempts… enough said.

The Rams were hurting enough without Steven Jackson and Orlando Pace, now they lose Bulger? Don’t rush these guys back St. Louis. You are not a playoff team.
