Welcome to the Fantasy Football Cafe’s first mock draft of the 2007 season. Ten extremely bored owners got together and decided to test out and compile their player rankings with an early mock draft. There were several far reaches and stabs in the dark, but whether they turned out to be good moves or really bad busts, have fun analyzing the first mock draft of the season.
This was a 10-team serpentine style draft that started two Running Backs, three Wide Receivers, and has .5 points per reception.

Draft Commentary

Round 1 Commentary:
The Admirable: Steven Jackson is about to become the next Ladainian Tomlinson. Skipping Larry Johnson for Jackson may not be the most popular move, but it’s the right move.
The Abominable: Reggie Bush at #8 overall is too high, even with 0.5 points per reception. Edgerrin James at #9 is a stretch as well.
The Extra Point: This is the first draft in a while where a non-running back failed to crack the first round. Then again, it is a 10 team draft.
Round 2 Commentary:
The Admirable: Willis McGahee is a steal at #19. The combinations of Steven Jackson/Willis McGahee and Brian Westbrook/ Joseph Addai both look very formidable at this point.
The Abominable: Maurice Jones-Drew going at #14 overall is way to high, especially with the re-signing of Jacksonville RB “Fragile” Fred Taylor. The kid may have the potential to be great, but you have to take locks this high. Marion Barber III has the same concerns.
The Extra Point: On a team that has become run oriented, and with age a concern, Tory Holt is still the first WR off the board.
Round 3 Commentary:
The Admirable: Getting Reggie Wayne at #24 overall is a great pick. Think Marvin Harrison, only without the walker.
The Abominable: With the quarterback situation up in the air, and with a possibility of Calvin Johnson coming to town, the pick of Roy Williams at #28 looks like a desperate pick at the end of a position run.
The Extra Point: It seems like every draft had a WR run at the beginning of Round 3. Eight straight picks, all wide outs.
Round 4 Commentary:
The Admirable: Some good value at WR in this round. Plaxico Burress, Andre Johnson, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Javon Walker and Lee Evans are all quality picks.
The Abominable: Where to start? Kevin Jones is injured and no one really knows his status. Marques Colston is a prime candidate for a sophomore slump. Being the first to take a tight end is never a good strategy, and I’d be scared to death to spend a 4th round pick in a 10-team draft on Carnell Williams.
The Extra Point: Will the real Carson Palmer please stand up? The Palmer pick can make or break a draft.
Round 5 Commentary:
The Admirable: Drew Brees. That was highway robbery.
The Abominable: Lamont Jordan. Does anyone really think this guy can bounce back with the same offence and RBBC looming?
The Extra Point: This round seems to be filled with top 10 WR from 3 years ago.
Round 6 Commentary:
The Admirable: Donovan McNabb and Deangelo Williams are really terrific picks at this point. McNabb was crushing everyone in fantasy points prior to his injury, and for a 6th round RB, Williams is a good pick.
The Abominable: I don’t know which is worse. Taking Mike Furrey in the 6th, or being the first person to take a D/ST. The middle round picks make or break a draft, and these hurt.
The Extra Point: Vincent Jackson is really a wild card. He seems to be the heir-apparent in San Diego, but his skills don’t match with the head coach’s style of play.
Round 7 Commentary:
The Admirable: Travis Henry, Cedric Benson, and Thomas Jones highlight a surprisingly RB-rich round. Middle round picks like this get teams into the playoffs.
The Abominable: Nothing stands out, but it may have been to high to draft Jerious Norwood.
The Extra Point: Todd Heap at #61 or Tony Gonzalez at #64 sound so much better than Gates at #31. Always wait on your TE position and draft some depth.
Round 8 Commentary:
The Admirable: Getting Warrick Dunn after Norwood went off the board is great value. He is still the starter in Atlanta.
The Abominable: If Randy Moss stays in Oakland, this could be a wasted pick.
The Extra Point: Another D/ST goes off the board. It is still way too early to be adding the less important positions instead of adding depth.
Round 9 Commentary:
The Admirable: Michael Turner (even if he’s not traded, he’s a handcuff here), Devery Henderson and Ladell Betts show that valuable players can be had in the later rounds
The Abominable: The first kicker goes off the board at #83. For shame.
The Extra Point: Especially in a 10-team league, it pays to wait on your quarterback. Tony Romo in Round 9 has a real nice ring to it.
Round 10 Commentary:
The Admirable: Jamal Lewis and Matt Leinart highlight this round. Lewis in the 10th round provides the always needed RB depth needed to contend with injuries or make trades. Leinart is primed to explode in that offense this year.
The Abominable: It is a generally consistent trend that the top kicker from the previous year always finishes outside the top five kickers the following year. So why waste a pick on Gould here?
The Extra Point: Which year two WR will excel this year? Santonio Holmes or Greg Jennings?
Round 11 Commentary:
The Admirable: In the 11th round, you can’t beat Mike Vick or Eli Manning. They can win a week for your team all by themselves. Given, they can do the opposite to, but the value in the 11th round is there.
The Abominable: Chris Henry’s suspension, although it came down after the pick was made, really destroys that pick. But that is what you get for drafting low character players.
The Extra Point: Teams continue to take kickers, and there is no reason for it. Would you rather have Nate Kaeding or Eli Manning?
Round 12 Commentary:
The Admirable: Vince Young at #117 is a great value pick, whether he is a starter or a backup on your team.
The Abominable: I understand it could be viewed as a flyer pick, but does anyone really thing that LenDale “Tons of Fun” White can really turn it around in Tennessee?
The Extra Point: Kevin Curtis and Cory Dillon have no team, but still end up with fantasy homes. Hopefully for these owners, Oakland, Detroit, and Cleveland are not in these players futures.
Round 13 Commentary:
The Admirable: The teams that waited on TEs are collecting the rewards now. They didn’t lose many points at that position by waiting, and now should have good depth at the other positions.
The Abominable: Ashley Lelie is a wasted pick up. Both in fantasy and on the field.
The Extra Point: The Dominick Williams flyer pick is interesting, but does it have wings?
Round 14 Commentary:
The Admirable: Quality D/STs start to go off the board, and the owners taking them have got to be pleased.
The Abominable: Even if Ricky Williams does come back, and is in any type of shape, could he really make an impact on a team?
The Extra Point: Joe Jurevicious became a reliable backup late last season, but will the Browns new offensive coordinator be able to utilize him?
Round 15 Commentary:
The Admirable: Backing up an injury-prone Cedric Benson makes Adrian Peterson an attractive commodity.
The Abominable: Minnesota D/ST- teams will pass all over them.
The Extra Point: Kickers and D/ST run rampant in the second to last round.
Round 16 Commentary:
The Admirable: Jeff Garcia could be a great addition in the final round, depending on Chris Simms and Jake Plummer.
The Abominable: Cincinnati Bengals D/ST. They should be on the Waiver Wire.
The Extra Point: Ben Watson barely scored last year, but with PPR he becomes a valuable asset.
