2007 NFL Week 4 Barometer

By Scott Fish

Week 3 is in the books and many NFL teams have been badly bitten by the injury bug. A few teams are really standing out from the crowd, and have proven themselves to be frontrunners for that ring. It was not a good week to be an NFL running back. Will this upcoming week be the coming out party for some second stringers, or will we see a lot more passing? We enter the bye weeks next week. A time for some teams to heal, and others to prepare. It’s a chance for a poor start to be turned around.

Free Falling: New Orleans Saints (down 7 spots)

The Saints are in need of this week’s bye more than most. They need to get Bush and Stecker ready to carry the load. Either that, or change their offense around to have Bush be the main back. Either way, they will need the extra week to prepare. Their offense and defense looked horrible yet again on Monday night. The Saints dropped from 18th to 26th in the Barometer this week. Their offense took a huge hit this week as they lost Deuce McAllister for the season. The Saints will give Reggie Bush a few more carries and begin to incorporate more of Stecker and Karney in the offense. A far cry from what Deuce did for them. The last thing this team needed was injuries to an already struggling offense.

Flying High: Green Bay Packers (up 6 spots)

The Green Bay Packers have looked like the real deal the last few weeks. They made a statement to the NFL this weekend by defeating a very talented Chargers team. They are one of only two undefeated teams in the NFC and they have a much easier matchup this week in the quarterback-less Minnesota Vikings this weekend.

After each week of the NFL season, several active Cafe members get together and rank the 32 NFL teams from first to worst. The Barometer is an average of the rankings submitted by these members. To maintain consistency, the high and low scores have been removed.

upNew England1.221112112111

Another week goes by, another 38 point game by the Patriots. Randy Moss appears to be staying healthy and Tom Brady appears to be taking advantage of that. They are looking like a team that could go undefeated. Many have tried, only one has succeeded.

2 (2)

upIndianapolis1.912241231222

The Colts stay strong at number two in the rankings. Last year’s champions still haven’t lost, they just haven’t blown out teams like the Patriots have.

3 (6)

upDallas3.233334324433

The Cowboys destroyed the Bears on Sunday night. They have looked extremely good this year and Romo is looking like a true field general. They jump up in the Barometer three spots for defeating a decent opponent in convincing fashion.

4 (3)

upPittsburgh3.744523443344

The Steelers continue to ride Willie Parker in another big win. Willie had 133 yards rushing this week, continuing to be a beast for the Steelers. Smash mouth football is still alive and well!

5 (11)

upGreen Bay5.155455765555

The Packers are the big movers this week, jumping 6 spots. At the end of last season, they looked like a team that was gelling nicely. Brett Favre had said it was one of the most talented teams he has been on. Fast forward to this year. That talent has matured and the team is thriving. Go Pack Go!

6 (7)

downBaltimore7.0106689559686

The Ravens move up a spot this week after holding on to beat Arizona by 3. They have a nice matchup this week against the Browns. That SHOULD help keep them high in the rankings.

7 (4)

upSan Diego9.08787616146798

The Chargers lose again this week. This time to the streaking Packers. Tomlinson continues to be held in check, but I can’t imagine that will continue for much longer.

8 (5)

upChicago9.4991610798881311

The Cowboys made the Bears look pathetic on Sunday night. This game caused Lovie Smith to realize that he needs to take the blinders off when he watches Rex Grossman’s game films. Grossman is now benched in favor of Brian Griese. Will this help the Bears get on track to a Championship?

9 (8)

downDenver9.578141486131091013

Denver drops back a spot this week after losing to the Jaguars. The Jags kept Henry to only 35 yards. Without much of a run game, most teams have a tough time winning.

10 (10)

downSeattle10.211111891489710712

Seattle improved to 2-1 by beating the Bengals and their potent offense. Shaun Alexander hit the century mark, but also hurt his ankle. How will this affect the ‘Hawks going forward?

11 (12)

upHouston10.4610761311101416147

The Texans climbed a spot this week, knocking on the door of the top 10. Without Andre Johnson, then losing both Jacoby Jones and Ahman Green in the game, the Texans still came within a touchdown of beating the reigning champs.

12 (15)

downTennessee11.31319913111471211614

The Titans moved up a spot by outplaying a sad Saints team on Monday night. They managed to cause multiple turnovers in their victory. Young appeared to have a problem with his hand, but came back in to finish the job.

13 (14)

upCarolina13.11712111110101813131715

I have no idea how the Panthers won a game with Steve Smith only catching 1 pass for 10 yards. Oh yeah, they played the Falcons. I guess Smith can’t be a superstar every week. He was battling an injury throughout the game, so it was understandable. Jake Delhomme sprained his elbow during this game. It sounds like Carr will get his chance to start this week against Tampa.

14 (9)

upCincinnati13.21215101912181611121110

The Bengals lost in a close one to the Seahawks this week and fall further down the Barometer. They may have lost Rudi Johnson for a game or two. That is horrible news for the high flying offense of the Bengals, as their defense has trouble stopping teams.

15 (17)

downWashington15.31416121215121519181918

The ‘Skins lost a close division game this week and still managed to move up in the rankings. My guess is people are seeing that Campbell is the future of that team. Also, other teams are just performing worse than the Redskins are right now.

16 (20)

downPhiladelphia15.71517191717131115151516

What can you say about the Iggles this weekend? Westbrook… Curtis… McNabb… I am speechless. I’m surprised they aren’t ranked higher in this week’s Barometer. They really took it to the Lion’s defense.

17 (13)

upSan Francisco16.21613151616152016171817

Alex Smith is just not doing his job and Gore has been up and down, hampered by injury. They drop 3 spots after losing this weekend to the Steelers. Can they turn it around against the Seahawks?

18 (16)

upDetroit17.22018131523172118231620

The Lions got torched this weekend by the Eagles. I’m not sure which was more embarrassing, the Eagles uniforms, or the Lion’s defense.

19 (21)

downJacksonville19.21914222525191717142119

The Jags got a big win this weekend against the Broncos. Their offense was hurt by an injury to Fred Taylor in the process. Painful to see all these running backs go down this week.

20 (25)

upTampa Bay19.7212117221826122222129

Tampa Bay manhandled a visiting St. Louis team this weekend 24-3. They jump 5 spots up the rankings this week. Rookie running back Ernest Graham stole the show this weekend. He might be a guy to keep an eye on.

21 (19)

upMinnesota20.61820211822222520192221

The Vikings continue there quest towards a top draft pick by losing in arrowhead to the Chiefs. Even though they don’t have a quarterback, at least not one that deserves to be called an NFL quarterback, they have still been in every game down to the wire.

22 (23)

downArizona22.22224252019212323212323

The Cardinals benched their starting quarterback Matt Leinart partway through the game in favor of former MVP Kurt Warner. Warner brought the team back with a pair of touchdown passes, but it wasn’t enough to win. Are we about to see a quarterback by committee?

23 (24)

upNY Jets23.02322232726201921242424

The Jets held off an amazing game by running back Ronnie Brown to defeat the Dolphins in a game of winless teams. On a bright note for the Jets, Chad Pennington returned to the lineup and threw for a couple of touchdowns.

24 (26)

downNY Giants24.62425242620242424252526

The Giants won a divisional game against the Redskins and have another one against the Eagles this upcoming weekend. They have been hit yet again with the injury bug as Derrick Ward was hurt in this game. It’s a good thing Jacobs will be back soon.

25 (18)

downNew Orleans25.02726283221232726202028

The Saints have looked like the Saints of two years ago this year. Their offense can’t get anything going and their defense can’t stop anyone. They now lose a key piece of their offense in Deuce McAllister. Defenses no longer have to worry about the running back tandem, they can key in on Bush’s running style. At least the Saints have a bye week to get some things straightened out.

26 (27)

downOakland25.22523262127292225272625

The Black and Silver won a close game against the Browns this week by blocking a possible game winning field goal at the end of the game. Lamont Jordan continues to be a stud for the Raiders, racking up over 150 total yards and another touchdown.

27 (28)

upMiami27.62627272828253128282729

The Dolphins were last in the league in rushing coming into this week. Then Ronnie Brown decided to emerge running for 112 yards on 23 carries. He scored 2 touchdowns rushing and another receiving to lead the Dolphins to victory.

28 (22)

upSt. Louis27.42829293024273027263027

The Rams… well, they haven’t looked good. They couldn’t score on the Buccaneers and they lost Steven Jackson for at least a week. I think one week is being optimistic, he may be gone for a few weeks or more. Brian Leonard will fill in. He was a beast at Rutgers. Hopefully he can fill those very large shoes well enough to win a few games.

29 (29)

upCleveland27.82928202331312830292830

The Browns offense has really emerged in the last 2 weeks. Derek Anderson appears to have been the answer. Although they lost on a blocked field goal in the final minutes, this team looks like they will be a challenge for opposing teams.

30 (31)

downKansas City30.03130312429302629303122

The Chiefs beat a hapless Vikings team. They are very tough to beat at home. Larry Johnson was held to only 42 yards against a tough Minnesota run D. Unfortunately they travel to San Diego next week.

31 (30)

upBuffalo30.73032303130283231322931

The Bills drop a spot in the rankings this week after losing to the Patriots by a huge margin. Can you really blame them? It’s the Patriots. They score 38 on everyone.

32 (32)

upAtlanta31.43231322932322932313232

Ouch. Another week, another loss. The Falcons at least are seeing a slight connection between Harrington and White. Hopefully they can find a little bit of luck and turn it into a win next week against the up and coming Texans at home.
