Sleeper Watch

By KC Chance, Fantasy Football Cafe Regular

My sleeper: Glenn Martinez. Award yourself ten bonus points to whatever game you’re playing if you can name the team this guy plays on. He’s a wide receiver if that helps. He is a second year guy out of Saginaw Valley (where?). What if I told you he had six grabs for 70 yards in a run-away win just a few weeks ago and has nothing but potential to better those numbers come this Monday night? Guessed it now?

Glenn Martinez plays wide receiver for the Denver Broncos and, as of this writing, is sitting in the number three wide out spot. However, he could very well be Cutler’s primary target for week 8. Unfortunately for Denver fans, the wide receiver position is having a rocky year. The two big names to headline the season - Javon Walker and Rod Smith – are out. Brandon Marshall has played well in the void but now appears to be cracking under the spotlight. He added a DUI arrest this week to his growing list of bad behaviors. If Coach Shanahan doesn’t “punish” him this week, I’ll be very surprised.

Veteran Brandon Stokley is of course making the most of the situation (and is an excellent waiver wire pickup if he’s still out there) however his lingering injuries keep him on those scary “questionable to play” lists.

All of which leads us back to #17 Glenn Martinez. Be assured he will get some serious looks and opportunities on Monday against Green Bay’s average pass defense. The best news is he’s quick and with Cutler’s cannon of an arm, the deep threat potential is very appetizing.

Add in the game’s at home, the weather report is for clear skies, and it’s Monday Night Football (because “everybody comes to play on Monday Night”) and the situation can’t get any better for Martinez.

As an extra bonus, Denver faces Detroit’s horrendous pass defense in Week 9! Yes, things get a little tougher for the rest of the season but it’s fair to consider the wide receiver woes in Denver are far from over and Martinez could very easily find himself having to be “the guy” before the week 17 rolls around.
