Jamal Lewis’ status is still up in the air for Sunday which is no doubt heartbreaking for his owners who are well aware that Cleveland is hosting a banged up Miami team Sunday. The Dolphins have proven to be uncharacteristically ineffective against the run this season giving up tons of yardage as well as a league high eight touchdowns already. This situation does open the door for a good waiver wire steal and potential sleeper in Jason Wright.
Wright was Lewis’ fill in last weekend and managed decent production, especially considering he was running against the stonewall of New England’s front line. For a virtual unknown, he managed 59 yards on only 15 carries (that’s almost 4 yards a touch) with four receptions for an additional 43 yards in a game that had Cleveland quickly resorting to the passing game to keep up. If Wright brings the same level of intensity to this weekend’s match up, his potential is enormous.
Long term, the usefulness for Wright is unclear. Depending on Lewis’ injury, Wright might be nothing but a one-week wonder. Also consider that Cleveland is having their bye week in Week 7. However, if Lewis stays gimpy and Wright continues to show his talent, he would face some ideal match-ups with Week 8 against St. Louis and the critical Fantasy Football playoff weeks of 14, 15, and 16 against the generous run defenses of the Jets, Bills, and Bengals respectively.
Final thought: because Jamal Lewis (who is 28 and in his eighth year in the league) is only in a one year contract with Cleveland, Jason Wright could be the starter for Cleveland next year. Consider this week a scouting opportunity for a potential sleeper in next season’s draft. If you’re sitting at 0 and 5, it’s unfortunately probably time to start prepping for next year anyway.
Other Cafe Sleepers for Week 6
• Cleo Lemon – QB, Miami Dolphins
KC enjoys finding unique sleepers for the Cafe each week but she doesn’t want to steal all the fun. If you know of a possible gem in the rough, don’t hesitate to submit their name and a couple of paragraphs about him. The Cafe is always interested in hearing from more writers. You can catch up with KC in the Cafe's forums where she posts under the name of latraffic.
