Sleeper Watch

By KC Chance

I’m going with another running back recommendation this week. I know there are some of you who need players at other positions, but quite frankly, running backs are the key to winning in fantasy football and so the focus of my sleeper articles will remain in the backfield until we get into the bye-weeks. Besides, it never, ever hurts your team to have multiple running backs on your bench as the position is hugely volatile due to the punishment these players take each time they get on the field. A sleeper today could very well be a starter next week, making him either a nice fill-in for you or tempting trade bait for the other guy.

This week’s sleeper is DeShawn Wynn; the rookie running back with the amazing 2-0 Green Bay Packers. Some of you who watched the game will be wishing I had picked Wynn as my sleeper last week and ironically, he was on my short list, but his completely unproven skills kept his name out of the final spot. That is unfortunate as he had a great game Sunday where he scored two touchdowns.

Learning from my mistake, this week he has my seal of approval as a waiver wire grab, even though his match-up against San Diego might make some managers nervous. Don’t be. I went back and watched some highlights on Wynn from week two – he looked great. A regular human plow. And that is the style of running that is going to hurt San Diego’s blitzing defense the most this Sunday when they come into Lambeau Field to face the resurging Pack.

Selling points for #42 DeShawn Wynn:

• He is positioned to become “the guy” on the depth chart if his running back brethren keep on their current courses. Expected starter Vernand Morency has yet to see the playing field due to having a world of trouble with his knee, and Brandon Jackson has been nothing but ho-hum in his first two starts. If Wynn performs up to his potential this week, he is certain to move up the depth chart to the #1 or #2 position.

• He is facing an overrated defense that gave up over 125 yards rushing last week to the Maroney/Morris combo in New England. To make this even sweeter, if San Diego’s nose tackle, Jamal Williams, is still suffering from his Sunday night arm injury, running hard up the middle should be the play to call all day long.

• He is bull-strong and quick through the line, making him a perfect goal-line vulture week after week.

• He is a rookie which gives him added value in dynasty and keeper leagues if he continues to stand out throughout the season.

As always, good luck!
