Week 10

By Scott Fish

As former teams that were overloaded with fantasy studs are flailing, the Cardinals have emerged as a team you want players from. The Cowboys, Colts, and Patriots still have plenty of talent but they just can’t get it together and injuries are killing the fantasy value of everyone on their respective teams. The Cardinals have an MVP candidate and fantasy machine at quarterback in Kurt Warner. Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald have always been fantasy starters, but these three being so tough to stop has opened the door for Tim Hightower to run. Alongside him JJ Arrington went from sleeper a few years back, to bust, to relevant again. JJ is seeing flex plays this week in some leagues. As is Steve Breaston even with Boldin back. With a great matchup this week, and excellent matchups during the fantasy playoffs, Cardinal players are the guys to get right now. Did these Cardinals make it to the top of their positions in this week’s Start/Sit Rankings?

Our rating system is based on two sets of rankings. The first set is a value between 1-20, given based on a player’s Fantasy Value If Playing (FVIP). The second set is that player’s Playing Probability (PP). These two sets are thrown into a giant machine, twisted around a little, mixed up, sorted, resorted, then eventually darts are thrown at the results. If you require any further help, our start/sit forum is top notch. You will find quick replies to your questions there and many eager helpers!

Start: David Garrard, Jacksonville Jaguars (Rank: 14.00) – It’s getting tough to sit anyone playing against the Lions these days. Garrard is probably a backup on many fantasy teams. This week he faces a Lions defense that allows almost 20 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks. They have allowed 14 touchdowns in the first 8 games and have only 2 interceptions. Garrard should be a decent play.

Sit: Rex Grossman, Chicago Bears (Rank: 11.00) – Although Orton had done well fantasy-wise and Grossman looked decent last week, The Bears face the Titans this week. The Titans are one of the best pass defenses (and overall defenses) in the league. There won’t be a lot of opportunities for Grossman to get into the endzone.

Start: Thomas Jones, New York Jets (Rank: 17.00) – The Rams have turned things around recently. The one thing that hasn’t changed is that they are still giving up big days to opposing running backs. They have allowed 15 combined rushing and receiving touchdowns to running backs. Look for a good day from Thomas Jones.

Sit: Joseph Addai, Indianapolis Colts (Rank: 13.00) – Owners have been waiting and waiting to get Addai back into their lineups. This is not the week. The Steelers are one of the best against the run. The Colts just haven’t been the same offense this year aside from one game. Addai won’t get the same chances he has in previous years until they get back on track. It’s just a tough matchup for his second game back.

Start: Eddie Royal, Denver Broncos (Rank: 17.00) – Looking to grab a Thursday night early lead? The Broncos play a pretty soft Browns defense. The Browns pass defense is ranked 26th and they give up near 23 fantasy points per game to wide receivers. In recent weeks Royal has been the better option as teams try to stop Brandon Marshall. Jay Cutler looked to air it out frequently last week, expect more of it this Thursday.

Sit: Santonio Holmes, Pittsburgh Steelers (Rank: 14.00) – The Colts pass defense is stingy. Well, at least their run defense is so weak that teams don’t need to try passing. Look for the Steelers to do a lot on the ground and use the passing game only to catch up if needed. With Ben not 100% and an Indianapolis pass defense that is only allowing 10.7 fantasy points to wide receivers, keep Holmes on your bench if you have better options.

Start: Visanthe Shiancoe, Minnesota Vikings (Rank: 13.00) – This guy gets targeted in the red zone a ton. Has had an issue with dropping touchdowns in the past but he hasn’t had any issues in the last few weeks. He has 4 touchdowns and has scored 2 weeks in a row. The Packers are allowing about 7 points a game to tight ends, so he should fare well.

Sit: Vernon Davis, San Fransisco 49ers (Rank: 12.00) – There are things to like and things to hate regarding Davis. He has been a huge fantasy bust in a career that has been so hyped. Shaun Hill is more of a dink and dunk passer which could aid Vernon. Davis also plays a defense that has allowed 16 receiving touchdowns this year, which is most in the league. However, the guy has never performed when he should, and definitely hasn’t yet in 2008. It’s tough to trust the guy until he proves himself at this point.

Start: Ryan Longwell, Minnesota Vikings (Rank: 18.00) and Mason Crosby, Green Bay Packers (Rank: 20.00) – Two guys this week. This rivalry game has always been pretty good for kickers banging out 10 point games. Both kickers have been good fantasy scorers this year. Longwell dropped in the rankings this week because of his 4 extra point game last week. This week will be good for both kickers.

Sit: Robbie Gould, Chicago Bears (Rank: 18.00) – The Titans are allowing 4.6 points per game to kickers. Mason Crosby is the only kicker in the Titans 9 games to get 7 points or more. The Bears offense with Grossman might not be good enough to get them in field goal range that often.

Start: Arizona Cardinals (Rank: 16.00) – The Cardinals play the 49ers this week. The 49ers have given up more fantasy points to opposing defenses than any other team. Not to mention, in the first meeting between these two, the Cardinals racked up 4 sacks, 4 fumble recoveries, 1 interception, and only allowed 13 points. Anything near a repeat would be good.

Sit: Chicago Bears (Rank: 16.00) – This probably sounds crazy to some. Take a look at the Titans and what they do to opposing fantasy defenses. In standard scoring they are dominant. They have played the Jaguars (3), the Bengals (2), the Texans (2), the Vikings (1), the Ravens (2), the Chiefs (0), the Colts (0), and the Packers (2). The Titans have only allowed 12 total fantasy points to defenses this year. Some of those defenses are pretty good too. The Bears have been a solid fantasy play in 2009, but this is probably the week to look elsewhere.

Many thanks to the people who helped put this together: treat24, Dan Lambskin, and utility-hook who helped with the rankings! If you would like to help with the rankings you can do so here each week.
