Another week in college football and another team in the top 10 has gone down. West Virginia, which was highly ranked by any poll you looked at, was dominated by an ECU team that came into the week unranked. The win over West Virginia has vaulted ECU into the middle part of every college poll out there. West Virgina was the only top 10 team to go down in week 2, but they were not the only top team to struggle. Ohio State, number 4 in last week’s poll, struggled mightily and almost lost against an Ohio team that lost to Wyoming the week the before. The score in the Florida/Miami game does not indicate just how close that game was. The Gators pulled away in the second half after they made some adjustments, but the Hurricanes went into the second half only down six in the swamp. Week 2 was another great week in college football and we are now starting to get a feel for which teams are going to be contenders and which ones are pretenders.
The week 2 schedule did not look like it was going to produce many good games, but that is why they play the games. Some games that looked like blow outs ended up in upsets or close calls. Here are some notes from three games I enjoyed from week 2:
West Virginia at East Carolina — The East Carolina Pirates were 2-17 against the Mountaineers going into last Saturday’s game and didn’t look like they belonged on the same field as West Virginia in a 48-7 blow out last season. East Carolina was coming off of a hard-fought emotional game against Virginia Tech the week before, and the opportunity for a letdown was certainly there, but they came out and dominated the number 8 team in the country. If you watched any of this game, then you know that the score does not reflect just how much East Carolina dominated this game. West Virginia could not throw or run the ball, and their defense was run over by East Carolina. The Pirates came into the game fired up and they showed that the week 1 game against Virginia Tech was no fluke. Watch out for East Carolina because their schedule is not very tough the rest of the season and they are a very good team.
Ohio at Ohio State — I figured that we would get to see a whole half of last year’s number 1 recruit Terrell Pryor in this game because OSU would be up big at half, but I guess that is why we play the games. OSU was without Chris “Beanie” Wells, but they should have still won this game going away. It was said in the college forum and it is worth repeating here: “If Ohio had any sort of passing game, they would have won this game.” Ohio threw for only 109 yards and had 4 interceptions, yet they only lost to OSU by twelve, with seven points coming on a punt return late in the game. OSU needs to step it up this week because they have to go to California and play the men of Troy.
Miami at Florida — As I Gator fan, I was looking forward to Saturday night because I felt we would finally beat Miami in a long time. The Gators won the game 26-3, but not before Miami gave me a heart attack in the first half. The Hurricanes dominated the Gators offensive line all game long and made a living in the Florida back field. During the game you could see the frustration in Tim Tebow’s face all night because he had no time to pass the ball and when he finally did get the ball off, his wide outs dropped the ball. In the end the Gators seemed to outlast the Hurricanes, and as the game wore on the Gators started to throw the deep ball more and finally got their vaunted offense going. I can tell you first-hand though that Randy Shannon has the Hurricanes on the way back, and the Hurricanes will be a top team once again very soon.
With all that said, here is our Week 3 Top 25:
