Cafe/Fleaflicker Challenge: The Challenge Bowl

By R.J. White

Greetings from Austin Bergstrom International Airport! I might be going home for the holidays, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have time to give you a little Cafe/Fleaflicker Challenge update. If you recall, the Cafe pulled out an eight-game win in the Challenge during the regular season, and with the Cafe competitors successfully defending the Cafe’s honor, each of our eight owners have received a shiny new icon. Congrats, guys! Now let’s take a look at how the playoffs — where we’ll determine the individual champion of the Challenge — are shaping up.

Round 1 involved a matchup between Cafe vets mattb47 and flotsamnjetsam. Flot was the second-highest scoring team in the league, and Matt was fifth, so you’d expect a ton of points in this one. However, the defenses must have came to play as Matt was able to take Flot out in a very low-scoring game. Matt moved on to battle Cafe No. 1 seed bungle613 this week. In the Fleaflicker bracket, Darkseid easily defeated rwk1967 to move on to the semis and a match with h2oski.

Week 15’s two contests are for bragging rights in each conference and a trip to the Challenge Bowl. The winner of each game will be crowned champion of their respective conference, so there’s a lot at stake this week.

On the Cafe side, we’re surprisingly in the midst of another low-scoring game. Matt has a 1.7-point lead over Bungle, and each team has one player appearing in the Monday night game. Matt will be hoping for a big game from the Redskins defense, while Bungle needs mulitple field goals from Lawrence Tynes. Depending on which guy you’re rooting for, now you know which way to direct your MNF karma.

On the Fleaflicker side, Fleaflicker top-seed h2oski scored triple digits — an impressive feat in a 16-team league at this point of the season — to win a high-scoring game against Darkseid. Ski’s huge advantage came at QB, where he scored over 44 points with Aaron Rodgers while Darkseid QB Tom Brady barely topped seven points. Not even a huge day from Jamaal Charles was enough to make up the difference for Darkseid. Congrats to h2oski, the Fleaflicker Champion, and good luck in next week’s Challenge Bowl!
