Defenses deserve more attention than kickers, but not by much. In fact, I usually have as much success playing matchups throughout the year by cycling through unwanted Ds like the Bills and Colts as the people that spend high picks on defenses. Whether you like to go the matchup route or you prefer to lock down a solid top-10 defense, you should definitely avoid the first defenses off the board. History shows that those owners who reach for the popular No. 1 pick usually end up with egg on their face. Maybe that’s why dream_017 ranked the Jets as just the seventh best defense this year. His top pick? The Cafe’s eighth-best defense in this list, the Saints. Either dream_017 is crazy, or he’s a genius; I wouldn’t bet against either.
Thanks again to bungle613, joejlitz, dream_017, flux, and bazzy_51 for submitting the rankings that were averaged with my own to give you these rankings.

The Strategist
Jump on the Chargers early, as they square off against the Chiefs, Jaguars, Seahawks, Cardinals, Raiders and Rams in the first six weeks of the season. Looking down the road, the Dolphins look like they have a great chance of shining in December, playing the Browns, the Jets, the Bills and the Lions in Weeks 13-16, and all but the Jets game comes at home, where the crowd should make quick work of those QBs.

I like PHL this year and hope they’ll fall to me. I’ll grab them in 13 if they are still there.
They’ve been a top-5 fantasy DST in 2 of the last 5 years (#3 last year). Moreover, they’ve got electric DeSean Jackson returning punts and ILB Stewart Bradley is coming back after missing almost all of last year. Also – last year was Sean McDermott’s first year as D coordinator after replacing (future HOF?) Jim Johnson. With a full year under his belt, his schemes should come together even more.
I could be crazy. I have a wacky formula that I use and it has worked pretty good in the past. I’ve ended up with the top defense 3 out of the last 5 years – and none of them have been selected before the second to last round.
