Updated Fantasy Football Rankings: QB

By R.J. White

Plenty has changed since we brought you our first QB rankings in June. Today, we’ll plow through our old rankings and make a few updates. The initial rankings were done by our esteemed panel below. I’ve made the changes myself, altering only the players I feel are now way off track.

Big props go to bungle613, joejlitz, aaawall91, Dan Lambskin, dream_017, flux, LS2throwed and bazzy_51 for joining me in initially ranking players.

Updated Quarterback Rankings

1. Aaron Rodgers
2. Drew Brees
3. Peyton Manning

No changes to this tier. Rodgers will cost you a first-rounder, and the other two cost second rounders. If you miss out on one of the three, don’t overreact and grab a Tier 2 guy early. Plenty of startable QBs can be found throughout the draft.

4. Matt Schaub
5. Tom Brady
6. Tony Romo
7. Philip Rivers (-2)

I’d much rather have Brady and Romo than Rivers. The mock draft community agrees. At this point, with Vincent Jackson nowhere to be found, I can’t see taking Rivers over any of the top six.

8. Jay Cutler
9. Eli Manning
10. Brett Favre
11. Kevin Kolb
12. Matt Ryan
13. Joe Flacco (+2)

Eli Manning and Favre are a little high for my liking. Since Flacco makes much more sense in this tier than in the following one, he jumps a few spots.

14. Donovan McNabb
15. Carson Palmer
16. Matthew Stafford
17. Chad Henne
18. Ben Roethlisberger (+3)

Yes, he’s suspended for the beginning of the season, but you’re only drafting Roethlisberger as a No. 2 QB anyway. If you land a starting signal caller with a late bye week, Big Ben makes perfect sense for your team.

19. Alex Smith
20. Vince Young
21. David Garrard
22. Matt Leinart
23. Matt Cassel
24. Mark Sanchez
25. Jason Campbell
26. Matt Moore
27. Kyle Orton
28. Matt Hasselbeck

There isn’t much to love about this tier of quarterbacks. I try and have my backup before we reach the Matt Leinart/Mark Sanchez portion of the draft, and you should too.

29. Josh Freeman
30. Sam Bradford
31. Jake Delhomme
32. Trent Edwards
33. Byron Leftwich
34. Michael Vick
35. Derek Anderson
36. Charlie Whitehurst
37. Jimmy Claussen
38. Brian Brohm
39. Tarvaris Jackson
40. Brady Quinn
41. Seneca Wallace
42. Josh Johnson
43. Dennis Dixon
44. Tim Tebow
45. A.J. Feeley

If you play in a league where 45 QBs come off the board, you have a serious fantasy football addiction. I don’t know whether to be disgusted or proud.

The winning team in your league will probably end up having one of the seven QBs in our top two tiers, but I don’t have any problem with grabbing a Tier 3 guy and McNabb as a backup, especially considering the new Redskin has the easiest fantasy schedule for QBs in the league.
