Welcome back to the first full edition of the Cafe’s Start & Sit column in 2011! I’ve been joined by Calyxes, 204BC and murphysxm in ranking all fantasy relevant players this week. We posted the ratings for New Orleans and Green Bay players a day early to give you an idea of their fantasy worth, and in particular, the running backs were particularly hard to peg. In fact, we hesitated placing any of them as a start in this Week 1 matchup. Of course, that’s in the past now, and you’re only concerned with the future, so let’s get to the Starts and Sits for this week.

Start: Matthew Stafford. Our raters are riding the Detroit bandwagon pretty hard right here, rating Stafford as a top-six guy this weekend over bigger names like Tony Romo and Matt Ryan. He’s coming off an outstanding preseason and looks ready to make the leap (as always, if healthy). With Aqib Talib at less than 100 percent, Stafford should have no problem getting the ball downfield to stud WR Calvin Johnson. Unless you have an elite QB, it’s hard to bench the Lion here. Looking for a Manning replacement? Try Matt Hasselbeck (see the WR section for comment).
Sit: Joe Flacco. The Baltimore QB obviously has a history of taking on the Steelers, and in six career games against Pittsburgh he has just six TDs while averaging 214 yards and completing 55 percent of his passes. Those aren’t numbers you want to see from your QB1, and while Baltimore made significant off-season moves to give Flacco weapons, this feels like a low-scoring contest, making Flacco an easy sit.

Start: Beanie Wells. While the Cardinals picked up Chester Taylor after the final preseason cuts, he’s no threat to make an impact in this game. Unless you think Arizona is ready to give significant carries to LaRod Stephens-Howling, that puts Wells in line for 25-plus touches in a game Arizona is expected to win. He has the potential to lead the league in rushing in Week 1 because of the expected heavy workload, which means you want him in your lineup.
Sit: Knowshon Moreno. The presence of John Fox should in theory help Moreno’s fantasy value, but there’s nothing stopping the new coach from leaning on the bigger Willis McGahee in this game. Moreno doesn’t have a history of success against the Raiders, averaging 3.3 yards/carry and 47.5 yards/game in four career matchups, adding just 19.3 yards/game through the air on a total of seven catches. It’s enough to make you take a wait-and-see approach with Moreno.

Start: Kenny Britt. Britt managed to avoid suspension after an eventful lockout, and he should start the season with a bang in this juicy matchup. The Jaguars gave up 250 passing yards/game and 28 TDs last season, and with Chris Johnson in the fold for Week 1 and the Jaguars’ likely commitment to stopping him, Britt and Jared Cook could have a huge game. One final note: Matt Hasselbeck’s best regular-season performance in the last three years came against Jacksonville, and oh by the way, he’s coming off a huge postseason. I love both these guys this weekend.
Sit: Miles Austin. Austin is easily the big-name WR with the worst shot at fantasy nirvana this week. For starters, he’s been limited this week with a hamstring injury and figures to be nowhere near 100 percent on Sunday. Then you factor in Darrelle Revis, the league’s best cornerback, squaring off opposite him on most snaps. Third, Austin hasn’t played up to his ability in night games. Over the last three years, he’s averaged 80 yards/game with 15 TDs in 23 day games and just 58 yards/game with three TDs in nine night games. The warning signs abound: stay away.

Start: Todd Heap. Since most teams don’t carry a backup TE/K/DF in fantasy, we’ll focus on starts from here on out. Heap has a dream matchup, facing a Panthers team that returned all their key pieces from last year. Why is that important? They finished last in the league in DVOA against tight ends last season. Kevin Kolb needs a reliable No. 2 receiver in this offense, and that’s poised to be Heap this week.

Start: Arizona Cardinals. Let’s make it a clean sweep for the Cardinals in the bottom half of the article. How can you not love defenses facing rookie QBs in their first road starts? I personally have the Cleveland defense in several leagues, but the Cardinals look like a sweet pick as well.

So your Sayin to play Fred jackson or Michael bush over miles Austin? Only because of the so called “revis island” Hmmmm. Now I’m undecided
Thanks for the rankings! Friday seems like “last minute” for someone hungry for the info, but the Cafe rankings are always worth the wait.
I think Houston’s defense will do better than ranked, but I understand you guys putting it where you did. Given the situation, they could be a top 5 defense this week.
I can’t believe Seahawks defense is ranked so low. They are my plug’n'play defense of the week. The 49ers offensive line is looked terrible in preseason and I think the Seahawks will wreak some havoc.
Also, I think Lance Kendricks is rated way to low this week. Eagles defense allowed the most points to the tight end position last year.
Everything else looks pretty good.
I find it unusual that Jimmy Graham wasn’t even mentioned in the list of TE’s. He’s not truly tested, but he does have the Brees cannon feeding him. I started him last night and he outscored Jermichael Finley.
No Saints or Packers rated since game was last night Noah….I wonder if you have Collins too low….Indy will be throwing all day to catch up to Houston…..Eli may be too high as Giants will run the ball and Wash wont score
Hello, I need help. I have Percy Harvin and Mike Williams SEA. I am debating on starting M. Williams based on S. Rice injury and San Fran Def. and sitting P. Harvin based on San Diego Def. Please help me decide the best option.
I would prefer Harvin if it were my team. I understand your reasoning, but I don’t have a lot of confidence in Tarvaris Jackson to get Williams many catchable targets. Harvin should wind up with more touches, and as a better playmaker, he has the better shot at a big performance anyway.
Who should I start at my flex postion having trouble picking between Stevie Johnson, Aaron Hernandez, or Brandon Jacobs.
And its a PPR League
@daullaz: Thanks for the input. I really appreciate it.
@jzayas22: In a PPR, I think you gotta go Johnson.
