As I sit on the couch post-NFL Draft, my mind starts to really get geared up for the upcoming fantasy drafts. Interestingly, I am already starting to see some players that I like more and less than the national pundits in the rookie draft class. So I figured it’s probably time to start going out on some limbs and talk about my early thoughts. Today’s article is going to highlight three players I am much higher on than most, and three players I am starting to realize I will not own because I don’t like them as much as others. I will now put a big asterisk next to this column; I reserve the right to change my mind as we learn more about camp competitions, injuries, etc. [More]

Well it took me awhile to finish but despite a strikingly sloth-like pace in completing it, I present to you my 2013 NFL Mock Draft. Admittedly the first half looks alarmingly similar to fellow Cafe writer R.J. White’s recently published mock but bear with me, I threw in some curveballs later in the round. The first round of the NFL Draft is never short on surprises or shenanigans (shall we all fondly recall the profound loss of words we experienced when Christian Ponder went 12th overall) and I tried to consider that when constructing this mock. I didn’t mock any trades because of sheer unpredictability but I’ve provided brief commentary on some of the more troubling picks in order to explore other possible outcomes. Feel free to comment on how little I know or how wrong I’m going to be below, and a happy NFL Draft to all! [More]

I’ve done some questionable things to put together this 2013 NFL Mock Draft. Some unethical things. Some potentially illegal things. In order to give you the best mock draft possible, I used guile and subterfuge to get inside the heads of the decision makers of all 32 teams. Sometimes, it was easy: an unlocked desk drawer, a desktop icon entitled “NotDraftPlan.doc,” an interview with Broncos GM Peyton Manning. Sometimes, it was anything but easy. I figured the easiest way to read the mind of Patriots head coach Ayatollah Belichick was to break into the Department of Defense’s research and development headquarters, steal their most advanced plans for clandestine neuro-interrogative technology, make a few necessary improvements and pull Belichick’s draft thoughts out of his skull as he slept. The hardest part? It took me three tries to find the right house. [More]

Aaron Hernandez has been the sort of dependable football player that elicits the confidence of his team, his fans and fantasy football GMs alike. Clearly, the Patriots believe in him; they signed him through 2018 and gave him a $12.5 million signing bonus. Fantasy GMs are beginning to recognize him as a first-tier TE. 2013 is revving up to be a hallmark year for Hernandez. Today, we are going to breakdown what to expect from him this year and how to draft him. [More]

Welcome to Semifinals Week in most fantasy leagues. If you’ve made it this far with LeSean McCoy stuck on your bench, you’ll have to go another week without the back known as Shady. He’s already been ruled out for Thursday night, as has Michael Vick. However, I see a nice bounce-back game coming for Bryce Brown, so much so that I’ve left him in my top 10 this week. Keep him in all lineups. Where did everyone else fall in Week 15? Check them out below. [More]

Folks that were hoping to have Percy Harvin back for the fantasy playoffs and now scrambling for a backup plan. One thing’s for sure: it’s not safe to bank on any other Minnesota receiver seeing a significant boost of value. For the remainder of the season, that Viking offense is Adrian Peterson on first, second and third down, with a little bit of Kyle Rudoplh sprinkled in. Aside from that, where do we rank new starters Alex Green, Montell Owens and others? See for yourself below. [More]

Most leagues have one more week of the regular season for teams to get into the playoffs. Are you on the outside looking in, or are you jockeying for playoff position? If you have reason to check out our Start/Sit rankings during the last week of your regular season (or the first week of your playoffs), it’s been a good year for you. However, the game changes in December. In most leagues, what you did in the season’s first three months matters little when it’s win-or-go-home fantasy football. We’ll do our best to give you the little push you need in your tough lineup decisions below. Feel free to ask questions in the comments section below. [More]

It’s easy for sports fans to pigeonhole a player; the athletes who never get the chance to succeed are prematurely deemed unsuccessful. The inferred lack of propriety of an athlete most often comes as the result of having never been given the proper opportunity to demonstrate their talents. Some athletes, however few and far between, break through the barrier of non-belief when good fortune comes knocking. These “late bloomers” sometimes prove themselves to be as good as the best of their position; others only prove themselves to be as bad as the worst. For wide receiver James Jones, when bad luck reared its ugly head and sidelined Greg Jennings, he solidly established himself as the former. [More]

Sleeper Watch
(by aylor70)

Week 13 means one thing: playoffs. They’re either starting or will shortly for most leagues. With most leagues trade deadline already passed, in this article of sleepers we will take a look at playoff matchups. I will first go over some sleepers for week 13, then take a look at weeks 13 to 17 and try to prepare you for playoffs. I will go over what teams have the best matchups for your starters, and then take a look at some sleepers that could help your chances in the playoffs. [More]

Week 12 looks like it could cause a lot of headaches for fantasy owners because of all the injuries from the past two weeks. In this week’s sleeper section, I will take a look at players that could fill in your lineup in place of an injured starter. I will talk to you about a couple quarterbacks with some bright upside, four running backs that have their chance to shine, some wide receivers looking for redemption, and three overlooked tight ends that will try to step up for their teams. [More]

With OTAs and mini-camps right around the corner, it is an ideal time to study dynasty tiers. This article series, Dynasty Tier Breakdown, will take a look at dynasty tiers for quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers and tight ends. Let’s start with quarterbacks. [More]

2012 Fantasy Football Rankings: Sept. 1 Update
(by <a href="http://www.fantasyfootballcafe.com/writer_profiles.php?author=173" title="Posts by R.J. I’ve updated my rankings one more time in advance of the fantasy football season. With Maurice Jones-Drew surprisingly still holding out for a new contract (I thought he’d report this past week like Mike Wallace), I’ve dropped him in my rankings. I’ve also removed preseason cuts like Tim Hightower, Deion Branch and Jabar Gaffney. Even if they may not be out of a job for long, there’s no point in drafting them in any league until they’re employed. As for the rest, check them our for yourself. [More]

I spent a couple hours going through my rankings and making a few tweaks here and there, as well as running through the PPR rankings and adjusting anything I didn’t like after the auto-converter on Fantasy Pros had its way with my standard rankings. For those of you relying on the Overall 200 rankings, I want to point out that it’s a lot better to break the positional rankings into tiers and not worry about the overall rankings after about the 50th pick. Be sure to check out why I ranked Doug Martin over Fred Jackson. Finally, we’re looking to get our Week 1 Start/Sit Rankings published a couple of days before the kickoff game. If you’d like to participate, send me a private message and we’ll get you set up. Feel free to lambast my rankings and post your specific questions in the comments section. I’ll get to them as soon as I can. [More]

With a couple of weeks of preseason out of the way, I’m back with another set of rankings. I personally have two drafts coming up this week — one for the Fantasy Sports Writers Association Industry League and another in the Fantasy Pros Invitational — and I’ve been mocking like crazy and finding a few more tendencies I have when it comes to Player X vs. Player Y. These are reflected in the rankings below. I’ve already spoke at length why I ranked Matt Ryan over Cam Newton — be on the lookout for another rankings explanation article this week as well. [More]

With most championships being decided in a wild and wacky week 16, only a select few remain in folds of two-week championship games and leagues with late-starting playoffs. Were you saved by Jonathan Stewart and Jerome Harrison, or ruined by the disappearing acts of Mike Sims-Walker and Tony Gonzalez? If you need help with your flex spot (or any other roster slot) this week, the guys at 4thandG will still be around to tirelessly answer all e-mails, Tweets, PMs, etc., that we get for the final week of the 2009-10 fantasy football season. We’re hoping to get a season wrap-up show out next week, so there should be one last opportunity to hear us chit-chat about the goings on of the NFL before we take a hiatus and head over to the baseball side of the Cafe for another season of The Can of Corn! Make sure to check back if you want to hear how some of our season-long competitions/predictions turned out (also known as tune in if you want to hear us recap how wrong we were about many things in the preseason)! We hope you had a great (and safe) New Year’s, and we’ll be talking (at) you sometime next week [More]

Welcome to 4th and Goal, hosted by Michael Stephens and Nate Davis! What a wild and wacky week 15 that was? With Jerome Harrison running into the record books, a crazy shootout at Heinz field and numerous stars (cough, cough…Thomas Jones, Wes Welker and company!) you are a fortunate fantasy GM to still be alive in this season’s playoffs, that’s for sure! One week remains in most leagues, and it’s the most important week of all: championship week, the Shiva Bowl, or whatever you and your league-mates call it, is here and it’s time for one last battle for the title! Sadly, you’re going to have to do it without the witty advice of your favorite fantasy podcasters, as they’ve had to abandon the podcasting bunker (known also as Michael’s spare bedroom) this week. With both hosts out of town for Christmas before any relevant injury news or player updates have really surfaced, the podcast and its popular segments will be going on a one-week hiatus from the airways. We want to make sure you know that you can still reach us by e-mail, Tweet or private message though, and you are encouraged to send us any and all championship-related questions post haste and we’ll make sure to get back to you in time for your lineup decisions this week! So without further ado, have a safe and happy holiday, and (more importantly) take home that fantasy title for which you’ve worked so hard! [More]

Welcome to 4th and Goal, hosted by Michael Stephens and Nate Davis! With fantasy GMs and their teams dropping like flies in the first round of the playoffs last weekend, the field is being narrowed and the championship is now in sight! Only two more weeks remain in the fantasy season (unless you play in one of those cooky week-17 championship leagues, in which case we’re sorry you’ll actually have to play Mike Hart and Lance Moore) and every decision is even further magnified! You don’t want to be that guy who starts the kicker who was just replaced, or a running back who just found his way into an ugly three-way timeshare, and the best possible way to avoid that is to listen, and listen closely! This episode has a ream of injury news and player updates, as well as your old favorites, like Would you Rather, Locks and Flops and Cafe Talk, and we strive to do everything in our power to help you get one step closer to fantasy title town. If you’re down in the dumps after a bad start, take solace in this fact: Michael faced a guy who owns Peyton Manning, Maurice Jones-Drew and Reggie Wayne (that’s an 86-0 hole for those of you playing the home game), so it can’t possibly be any worse than that! Anyway, it’s time to call your best play or hit the showers (like Michael will soon be doing), because it’s 4th and Goal! [More]

Welcome to 4th and Goal, hosted by Michael Stephens and Nate Davis! We’ve made it to the fantasy Promised Land! Care to join us? We at 4th and Goal hope that all of our listeners are able to taste the sweet victory of the fantasy playoff season, but if you had one of those years and just need to save face and hunker down until 2010, we’re here for you too! Now that we’ve reached the most volatile part of the season, where one bad week can mean the end for you and your team, there’s no time like now to check out this podcast for all of your injury news, start/sit advice and everything else we offer each week! With names like Chris Johnson and Hines Ward (as well as dozens more) showing up on the injury report for week 14, you’ll need to be on top of things if you want to move on to the second week of the postseason! We’ll do everything for you that we can (except hit “submit lineup”), and all you have to do is listen – it’s time to call your best play or hit the showers, because it’s 4th and Goal! [More]

Since I haven’t yet finished ranking prospects — a list that will change pretty constantly anyway — I wanted to give a brief update on just a few of the early-round prospects. I’ll try to stick to those that have fantasy relevance but forgive me if I stray from that path a bit. This year’s draft is lacking in elite talent particularly on the offensive side of the ball, so I’ll be highlighting some defensive players as well. [More]

We’re throwing the Week 12 rankings up a day early to help you accommodate those early Thursday games. Remember to have those lineups set Wednesday night! Plenty of injury situations bear monitoring, including LeSean McCoy, Darren McFadden, Felix Jones, Dwayne Bowe, Alex Smith and more. I’ll do my best to keep these rankings updated based on the ebb and flow of injury news, but always be sure to check out the pre-game inactive lists and to have a backup plan ready, just in case. In our Week 8 sleepers column, we’ll look at the Rams’ European vacation to find some passing-game weapons that could produce, a running back who couldn’t even average two yards per carry on 20 totes last week, a PPR weapon at tight end who’s widely available, and a defense coming off a bye. [More]

August is here, and with it, another year of fantasy football drafts. I’ve taken part in numerous mock drafts, and even one real draft, and it’s helped me shape my player valuations for the year. You can find all my 2012 fantasy football rankings below, including an overall ranking that may be useful for the first few rounds of your draft (after that, your roster should play a much bigger part in who you select than overall rankings). Some of it is surely questionable to the eye, as I stuck my neck out on a few guys. I’ll have more analysis on some of these “unique” rankings throughout August. For now, enjoy. [More]
