It’s a brand new year, with a brand new set of impact IDPs (Individual Defensive Players) that could make the difference. As IDP leagues have become more and more popular, so have the rankings needed to put teams over the top. This year, we will have basically the same set up as last year; each week will contain three players at each position: DL (defensive ends and tackles), LB (strong, weak, middle, inside/outside, however you want to put it) and DB (safety and cornerback). To benefit all league sizes, these players will have a percentage owned of less then 20 percent on Yahoo’s website. Enough with the talk, lets get to some rankings and projections! [More]

This article is the second of a series devoted to the “art” of winning fantasy football. Fantasy success is part art, part science. However, the “science” element–data, information, statistics, reports–has become increasingly easy to acquire, organize, and validate. Even modest preparation affords an owner “data parity” with the most experienced and prepared owners in the league. To create and maintain a competitive edge, therefore, requires emphasis on the “art” element of fantasy success. Judgment, creativity, and at times intuition are more pivotal than ever in establishing fantasy success. [More]

The best waiver advice to give to owners contemplating moves prior to Week 1 is remain calm. Buyer’s remorse is common among fantasy owners after the emotional high of draft day wanes and is replaced with cold, hard analysis. However, it is critical to avoid knee-jerk responses to perceived roster flaws or drafting errors. Rather than focusing on weaknesses, fantasy owners should identify roster strengths that might facilitate trades designed at addressing those perceived weaknesses in three to four weeks. Acting too soon plays into the hands of bottom-feeding competitors, who are all too happy to prey upon a nervous fantasy owner’s lack of staying power. [More]

You’ve probably heard us mention how well the Cafe rankings are doing, according to the website FantasyXPERT.com, but here’s a little reaffirmation straight from them. Thanks for taking the time to compile and rate us, guys! Nick is going to have his normal selection of write-ups for you in a bit, but we wanted to get our rankings up as soon as possible, so here are the charts … [More]

Start & Sit - Week 14: Colts, Saints Go To 12-0
(by Nick Hopkins)

At this point of the season, many leagues will have started their playoffs in order to avoid playing the championship in Week 17. (It’s a good idea if you ask me, I’ve been burned before by teams resting their starters…) In other leagues the playoffs may be just around the bend. In any case, the Cafe’s Start & Sit is here to make your lineup decisions a little easier. This week, Drew Brees tops our QB rankings after his 400+ yard performance in a comeback win against Washington, Chris Johnson leads the RBs as he continues his record-setting pace, and Andre Johnson ends up our #1 receiver after catching seven passes for 99 yards and a touchdown last week. Now, to the rest of the rankings! [More]

This fantasy season the Sleepers column will be taking on a slightly different look, as it will feature multiple players each week as opposed to a single sleeper of the week. With that in mind, this week’s column features two former top-ten draft selections and a newly minted starting quarterback in the desert. [More]

Zach Miller will be a top-6 TE. Miller finished the 2009 season with 66 catches (9th among TEs) and 805 yards (8th). Those are damn good numbers when you have to count on JaMarcus Russell and Bruce Gradkowski to get you the football. In 2010, Miller will be even better. [More]

I cannot tell you how many times I have given up on Ryan Torain and cut him from my roster. That’s not a great lead in for a sleeper article, but it is the truth. I have cut him from redrafts and literally just last week cut him from a dynasty league in which I had drafted him as a rookie. [More]

Mike Williams. No, the other Mike Williams. The Mike Williams you drafted in the first round of your rookie draft and cursed him out for the next two years. Well, he’s back. Pete Carroll and Mike Williams were together at USC during Williams great collegiate career and Carroll decided to take a flier on Williams for 2010 — you should too. [More]

Welcome to 4th and Goal, hosted by Michael Stephens and Nate Davis! One way or another this is the end of the road! With most championships being decided in a wild and wacky week 16, only a select few remain in folds of two-week championship games and leagues with late-starting playoffs. Were you saved by Jonathan Stewart and Jerome Harrison, or ruined by the disappearing acts of Mike Sims-Walker and Tony Gonzalez? If you need help with your flex spot (or any other roster slot) this week, the guys at 4thandG will still be around to tirelessly answer all e-mails, Tweets, PMs, etc., that we get for the final week of the 2009-10 fantasy football season. We’re hoping to get a season wrap-up show out next week, so there should be one last opportunity to hear us chit-chat about the goings on of the NFL before we take a hiatus and head over to the baseball side of the Cafe for another season of The Can of Corn! Make sure to check back if you want to hear how some of our season-long competitions/predictions turned out (also known as tune in if you want to hear us recap how wrong we were about many things in the preseason)! We hope you had a great (and safe) New Year’s, and we’ll be talking (at) you sometime next week [More]

Welcome to 4th and Goal, hosted by Michael Stephens and Nate Davis! What a wild and wacky week 15 that was? With Jerome Harrison running into the record books, a crazy shootout at Heinz field and numerous stars (cough, cough…Thomas Jones, Wes Welker and company!) you are a fortunate fantasy GM to still be alive in this season’s playoffs, that’s for sure! One week remains in most leagues, and it’s the most important week of all: championship week, the Shiva Bowl, or whatever you and your league-mates call it, is here and it’s time for one last battle for the title! Sadly, you’re going to have to do it without the witty advice of your favorite fantasy podcasters, as they’ve had to abandon the podcasting bunker (known also as Michael’s spare bedroom) this week. With both hosts out of town for Christmas before any relevant injury news or player updates have really surfaced, the podcast and its popular segments will be going on a one-week hiatus from the airways. We want to make sure you know that you can still reach us by e-mail, Tweet or private message though, and you are encouraged to send us any and all championship-related questions post haste and we’ll make sure to get back to you in time for your lineup decisions this week! So without further ado, have a safe and happy holiday, and (more importantly) take home that fantasy title for which you’ve worked so hard! [More]

Welcome to 4th and Goal, hosted by Michael Stephens and Nate Davis! With fantasy GMs and their teams dropping like flies in the first round of the playoffs last weekend, the field is being narrowed and the championship is now in sight! Only two more weeks remain in the fantasy season (unless you play in one of those cooky week-17 championship leagues, in which case we’re sorry you’ll actually have to play Mike Hart and Lance Moore) and every decision is even further magnified! You don’t want to be that guy who starts the kicker who was just replaced, or a running back who just found his way into an ugly three-way timeshare, and the best possible way to avoid that is to listen, and listen closely! This episode has a ream of injury news and player updates, as well as your old favorites, like Would you Rather, Locks and Flops and Cafe Talk, and we strive to do everything in our power to help you get one step closer to fantasy title town. If you’re down in the dumps after a bad start, take solace in this fact: Michael faced a guy who owns Peyton Manning, Maurice Jones-Drew and Reggie Wayne (that’s an 86-0 hole for those of you playing the home game), so it can’t possibly be any worse than that! Anyway, it’s time to call your best play or hit the showers (like Michael will soon be doing), because it’s 4th and Goal! [More]

Welcome to 4th and Goal, hosted by Michael Stephens and Nate Davis! We’ve made it to the fantasy Promised Land! Care to join us? We at 4th and Goal hope that all of our listeners are able to taste the sweet victory of the fantasy playoff season, but if you had one of those years and just need to save face and hunker down until 2010, we’re here for you too! Now that we’ve reached the most volatile part of the season, where one bad week can mean the end for you and your team, there’s no time like now to check out this podcast for all of your injury news, start/sit advice and everything else we offer each week! With names like Chris Johnson and Hines Ward (as well as dozens more) showing up on the injury report for week 14, you’ll need to be on top of things if you want to move on to the second week of the postseason! We’ll do everything for you that we can (except hit “submit lineup”), and all you have to do is listen – it’s time to call your best play or hit the showers, because it’s 4th and Goal! [More]

Owners hoping to win their leagues need an edge (no, not Edgerrin James, at least in this decade of fantasy). Almost all fantasy players have access to the same data, injury reports, and projections. Data is everywhere. If success in fantasy football historically has flowed part from art and part from science, recently the “science” element has become almost a nullity among prepared competitors. Owners no longer can show up for the draft confident that they alone understand league depth charts, training camp developments, trades, and injuries. All such information is available on the Internet, nicely formatted and easily digestible, by even the laziest of fantasy owners. Hence, the need for an edge. [More]

Plenty has happened since we last checked in with our June rankings. Terrell Owens has found a home. Wes Welker looks on track to be ready for Week 1, while Sidney Rice is dropping fast. Popular sleepers Johnny Knox and Malcom Floyd have surfed a wave of fantasy buzz to being sneaky-good pickups as WR3s. Several other deep sleepers are also coming up behind them. Let’s break it down. [More]

Barring a miracle remedy to the Vincent Jackson vs. the San Diego Chargers fiasco, Legedu Naanee will finally get his chance to make his mark in the NFL. As a fifth round pick in the 2007 NFL draft, Naanee has quietly gone about his business. Given that the Chargers had several skilled wide receivers, Naanee was unable to move up the depth chart. However, the departure of Chris Chambers in 2009 changed the playing field. Up until that point, Naanee had just 24 balls thrown his way; he caught 16 of them. Last year, he was targeted 29 times, catching 24 balls, 2 of them for touchdowns. Bottom line, Naanee catches what is thrown at him. [More]

Welcome to 4th and Goal, hosted by Michael Stephens and Nate Davis! Time for the most pivotal week of the fantasy football season! With the playoff futures of many fantasy teams hanging in the balance, this is the week that can make or break you more than any other! If you make the wrong choices this week, you could be done for the rest of the season, whereas if you make the right moves you could even be rewarded with a week 14 bye! We have lots of injured running backs and individual defensive players this week, headlined by Cedric Benson and Ray Lewis, as well as the usual mix of Cafe Talk, Locks and Flops and Would You Rather, so make sure to check out this episode as you make your final regular-season push of the 2009 season (unless, of course, you play a wacky week 17 championship game that is)! It’s time to call your best play or hit the showers, because it’s 4th and Goal! [More]
