It’s official: Brian Cushing out for year with torn ACL

Head coach Gary Kubiak confirmed the worst about inside linebacker Brian Cushing Tuesday afternoon: He’s lost for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered in the second quarter of the Texans 23-17 victory over the Jets Monday night.

An MRI Tuesday morning revealed the damage. He’ll have surgery in a couple of weeks, after the swelling has gone down.

“You don’t replace players like Cush,” Kubiak said. “The whole team has to step up.”

It’s the second time in three seasons the Texans have lost their defensive captain. Middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans suffered a torn Achilles tendon following a 4-2 start in 2010, after which the Texans lost eight of their next nine games to finish 6-10.

Kubiak said seen-year veteran Tim Dobbins, the special teams captain, is “option No. 1” to step in for Cushing, the team’s leading tackler so far and the spiritual leader of the NFL’s third-ranked defense. Dobbins replaced Cushing against the Jets and will apparently start against Green Bay at Reliant Stadium Sunday night.

Mister Alexander is the other backup inside and the Texans may also regain the services of Daryl Sharpton, currently on the PUP list because a severe knee injury suffered last season, by the end of the month.

Jogging soon: Motivated Brian Cushing continues rehab

ILB Brian Cushing leads the pregame huddle before the Texans face the New York Jets on Oct. 8, 2012, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

Four-and-a-half months after suffering a torn ACL, Brian Cushing is on the comeback trail with a singular purpose.

The Texans’ defensive captain and 2011 MVP hopes to lead the team to a Super Bowl that will be played in his hometown. Step one is making a full recovery from the left knee injury that ended his 2012 season after five games. Cushing has been rehabilitating at Reliant Stadium since October, intent on coming back stronger than ever in 2013.

“(It’s) been going well,” Cushing said on Tuesday afternoon in an interview with Texans Radio. “I’ll be here for the majority of the time and really just focusing on my rehab, getting back, getting my knee back to 110 percent and just really looking to the year coming up. Obviously, my year was cut short last year, and I’m looking forward to getting back out there with the guys and playing football.”

Cushing, who was operated on by surgeon Dr. James Andrews on Oct. 25, said Tuesday that he is “about a week” away from being able to jog.

“Really looking forward to that,” he said. “Really, where I stand right now is just looking forward to the next step always and what’s coming up and my progression. It’s been a long, long journey and I still have a lot to go, but you know, it just makes me cherish playing that much more, because when it’s taken away for you, you realize how much you love it.”

Update:

Brian Cushing cleared to return

Houston Texans linebacker Brian Cushing was cleared to return Wednesday by Dr. James Andrews from a knee injury that cut his 2012 season short, the team announced through its Twitter account.

Cushing will be ready for training camp, although the team will ease him back into action, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Cushing, 26, tore his anterior cruciate ligament after a rolling hit by then-New York Jets guard Matt Slauson on Oct. 8 of last season. Slauson was not flagged on the play, but he was fined $10,000 by the NFL.

Before his injury last season, Cushing had only missed four games in his previous three NFL seasons, and that was to serve a suspension in 2010 for a positive test for a banned substance.

Cushing's last major injury before the 2012 season came during his junior season at Southern California, when he missed three games with a sprained left ankle.

He led the Texans with 114 tackles in 2011 and had an interception and a forced fumble to go along with his 38 stops last season before his season-ending injury.

Texans ILB Brian Cushing (knee) made his debut in 7-on-7 drills Thursday.
Cushing tore his ACL during Week 5 last season. He said he has no residual effects from the injury and is cutting without pain. "It felt great," he said Thursday. "I've been telling guys, this is the right feeling." Cushing is on track to be ready for Week 1 as a borderline LB1 in IDP circles. Aug 1 - 12:27 PM

He went 10.09 in my recent draft (last night) - the 10th round was a major LB run, starting with 10.02 Bobby Wagner, 10.03 Sean Lee, 10.04 Ghad Greenway, 10.06 D'Quell Jackson (made it one pick before me dang it!), 10.08 Lavonte David, 10.09 Cushing.

Probably a bit lower than had he not blown out his knee, but still a confident spot to draft him with Derrick Johnson, Jerod Mayo, Wesley Woodyard still on the board.
