I love Gates and have ridden his great stats several weeks now. However, I'm not as optimistic now that San Diego has a couple of new toys at WR. How will the new Charger acquisitions affect Mr. Gates?
As a Gates owner, I was really concerned about the Chargers acquiring McCardell, particularly since I picked him up a few weeks ago. Then I realized that having McCardell would draw attention away from Gates, making him even more dangerous. Think about it...Teams have had to focus on LT2 and even R. Caldwell, which helped free up Gates. Now they have to worry about LT2, McCardell, and even Shaw.
I think this solidifies Gates as the best TE this year!

That argument is rather flawed. There are only so many balls to go around. Say you have Amani Toomer....then the team aquires TO and Randy Moss. Would that draw attention away from Amani Toomer? Kinda. It really means he'll catch less balls though.
In reality, we do not know what will happen to Gates' value. Time will tell. Certainly, Gates' owners can't be thrilled.
I have Tomlinson/Gates on my team, and having watched my fair share of Chargers games let me tell you: There's only so much offense to go around on that team!
I expect both sides are right on this one. Spreading the defense's attention on the field will give Gates more opportunities to get open & make plays. However, more talent on the field means that his numbers will become less consistent (and IMO consistency is one of the most valuable assets in FF). I'm not pleased.
I dunno. Watchin the game last week, Brees definetely likes throwing to Gates. I look at consistency. Shaw has never been consistent, and having McCardell around should make EVERYBODY better in that offense. I think when Brees needs a big pass play he will still look for Gates. Bottom line is if you have Gates, you have one of the best TE's in the game right now. I don't see anything happening to severely alter that.
"Sometime during the Pats game last week, I decided that Tomlinson was the best overall running back of my lifetime. There's nothing he can't do: deadly receiver, tough inside runner, explosive to the outside, you name it." - ESPN's Bill Simmons

McCardell and Shaw are both rather old... no better than # 2/3 WRs now... if anything, they're prestiege alone will draw coverage away from Gates... this is good news for Gates owners.

Shaw is ancient at 29 years old.
McCardell probably had his best season last year and suddenly he's washed up? He's legit. Don't sleep on this guy.

My bad... I was thinking about Engram for some reason. He's not ancient either, but past 30 is still up there. But anyways, who knows how much McCardell has worked out? Is he even in shape? I know he says he is... but that rarely means anything. Jeff Blake said last year preseason that he was in the best shape of his life, and that it was no secret he threw the best ball in the NFL. McCardell's a sleeper, but I'm not wasting a roster spot on him. You go ahead.
