ESPN takes on Limbaugh
July 23, 2003
Rush Limbaugh joins cast of ESPN's Sunday NFL Countdown.
ESPN wunderkind Mark Shapiro is programming Limbaugh as "the fan's view" (although most fans don't see a 600-market empire or $285 million radio contract in their lifetimes). El Rushbo will open with an essay, "then, three or four times during the program, I will choose when I wish to interrupt the discussion, dominate it, whatever."
Never mind if Berman can keep smiling through such bombast.
This is about attracting some of Rush's ultraloyal base, reputedly 20 million listeners weekly -- the same reason he once auditioned for the Monday Night Football role Dennis Miller got.
This is nuts. And, after the novelty wears off, will only
give Fox more viewers.
Who's making these decisions?
ESPN needs a serious gut check.
My 2 cents, anyway.
