Q: Re '85 Bears

Oakland's "Holy Roller".
And, of course - Franco Harris' "Immaculate Reception".

Everyone remembers these plays. These unlikely, incredible events. They've been shown and talked about a million times. And they even get their own "nicknames".

I've been telling a story, for years, about a game I saw during the '85 Chicago Bears' Super Bowl season.
It was one of the most incredible things I've ever seen in a football game. Yet NO one ever talks about it.
No one even seems to remember it!
And it sure as hell don't have a "nickname".

I usually bring it up whenever talk turns to the '85 Bears, or unbelievable things you've seen during games.
I keep telling this story, and telling this story, co-workers, friends, family, and I have never found a single person that remembers it. In fact, most people don't even believe it.
I've been disbelieved for so long - I'm starting to doubt it myself!!

I'm looking for someone that can say "Hell yes! I remember that!"
Or "Yea, I saw that." Or "Yea! I was at that game!"

Here's my story.
1985. Chicago Bears. It was fairly early in the season. Maybe the 4th or 5th game, something like that, and (I'm almost positive) they were playing Minnesota.
Late in the game, 3rd or 4th quarter, the Bears are losing. Bad.
QB Jim McMahon has been on the bench. I believe all day.
Finally, McMahon enters the game off the bench.
He steps onto the field and throws 3 TDs in 3 passes.
Not 3 series. 3 passes.

Pass #1: 1st series. 1st down. 1st play. Pass. TD. Kick. 7 pts.
Bears D immediately gets the ball back.
Pass #2: 1st series. 1st down. 1st play. Pass. TD. Kick. 14 pts.
Bears D immediately gets the ball back.
Pass #3: 1st series. 1st down. 1st play. Pass. TD. Kick. 21 pts.
Bears win.

That's my story. And that's what I'm saying.
3 plays. 3 TDs. 21 points. 8 seconds off the clock.

Does ANYONE remember this?
And if it's true, why the HELL isn't it ever talked about?

Well. I have, on very rare occasions of course, been known to see double.
But that would only account for 2 TDs!
It's 3 - and I'm sticking to my story.

Someone, somewhere must have seen this.
I can't be the only one to have watched this game.
If this don't pan out - I'm checking myself in.
Clearly, I would then need professional help.
Who's the Bear fan here? Help me! Or it's the clinic!

wow that is amazing, im a bit young to remember that too but it should be ranked high on the comeback list.

ive seen teams score 3 TDs in like 2 mins but 8 seconds!!! thats simply insane, id like to know if it was true as well.

The next game versus the Minnesota Vikings proved to be a nail-biter. True to form, Jim McMahon was sitting out the first half with back injuries (something that plagued him the entire season), and the Bears were in a hole 17-9 at the half. Jimmy Mac decided enough was enough and hopped in the game in the 3rd quarter. This proved to be the medicine the Bears were lacking. His first toss was a 70 yard TD pass to speedster Willie Gault. On the subsequent Viking possession, the Bear defense picked off a Tommy Kramer pass and gave Jimmy Mac the ball back. McMahon's second pass of the afternoon was a 25 yard TD pass to Dennis McKinnon. On the Bears next possession, McMahon threw a couple of dump passes and then found Dennis McKinnon again, a 43 yard TD play. The Vike's backs were broken and the Bears won the game 33-24.

OK! Now we're getting somewhere!
This must be the game.

I don't know what a "dump pass" is, but this story would mean it was technically, maybe, more than 3 passes, 3 TD.

Not sure the story is as I remember it, though.

Maybe by dump pass, he intentionally threw it away, or spiked it. On his 3rd true attempt, it was a TD.

I remember it as 3 passes (3 plays ONLY) 3 TDs.
What I definitely DO remember is that there were 8 seconds off the clock! Eight!
3 McMahon passes. 8 seconds. 3 TDs.

Still hoping someone else SAW this game. Live. TV or otherwise.

Sorry Weasel a little before my time too I dont think I started watching football until a few years after that oh I think maybe about 87 when the great Doug Williams and a no body named Timmy Smith led the Washington Redskins to a SuperBowl victory that still holds several SB records.

I was think though Weasel there is documented proof that you have not lost your mind yet and I think you should make it your goal in life to write every sports writer and football journalist there is and get this play(s) a nickname.

I think maybe even Berman might be able to do a feature on Countdown sometime during the season i think it would be great watching the clips with a couple of " he could go all the way" and a few whooooooooooopppppsssss in there

You know how ESPN reruns all the Super Bowl games before the SB each year?
For years, they'd show em and skip the '85 Bears.
Then I once tried to find the '85 Bears video from NFLFilms, and couldn't.
Somehow, I finally found out that there was some sort of legal problem with the Bears film from that season.
I think this has since been settled, but maybe that's why no one knows or talks about this.
W/O the film, and lot of people not around at the time just wouldn't know.

However it turns out, exactly, I think 3 TD by a QB in 8 seconds deserves some dadgum recognition.
AND a "nickname" of it's own.
It's one of the most incredible things I ever saw in an NFL game.
