Well, one of my jobs is as a history professor, so of late I have tried to use fearsome historical events/groups:
Fianna - the semi-mythological warrior bands of ancient Ireland, most famously led by Finn MacCool
Golden Horde - the Mongols that would come riding out of the east to plunder Eastern Europe, legendarily drinking blood from the very horses they were riding to keep up their strength
Reign of Terror - the period of the French Revolution when about 20,000 people lost their heads, quite literally, to the guillotine
Failing those, I went for a musical angle a few years ago:
Toejam Football - from the lyrics to "Come Together" by The Beatles
