How do you figure what a defense is worth...trade wise??

I have been throwing around trades for defenses before the trade deadline and was wondering what your feelings were on how to evaluate a defense's worth compared to a player? Do you match points up? People have requested number one players for defense.....just some thoughts..

I think the answer to this one is: It depends... it depends... it depends.

The only way I would use a defense as part of a deal is as a throw in to sweeten the pot.

For example, I have the Seahawks D and the Patriots D. If the other owner has the Cowboys D, I might trade him a Chad Johnson and Seahawks D for Tory Holt.

In this case, Tory Holt is supposedly worth more than Chad Johnson, but with the other team getting an upgrade at DEF, the deal becomes much more even.

If you ever trade a DEF straight up for a player, the defense should in the top 5 and the player should not be in the top 60 players. Something like that... you get the idea.

The players Im throwing around are Lloyd, Larry Fitz, and or Burleson.....the reply I get for defenses seem too high.....

How many teams are in your league and what defense do you currently have?

10 man league.....I have seattle.......I know statistically they're a good D...but my upcoming matchups are against teams with good Ds........Balt.....NE.......Phili......Its a money league ......competitive and I have players not being utilized....thought Id trade around before the deadline...

Stick with Seattle.

There is no other defense that you could get that would be a significant upgrade except for the Ravens. (And the Raven owner is not going to give them up)

You'll be fine. Don't worry about matching up with your opponent position for posiition. That is wasted energy. Your team is good enough to beat them overall or it's not.

By the way, Wistrom and Simmons should be playing now which should help SEA DEF.

I will also say it depends...

for one, it depends on your league scoring... in my league we richly reward low points, while we severely punish those who allow high points. Teams in my league (albeit on a very good day) can get over 30 points...

If your league only counts the sacks and turnovers, I'd say defenses are worth decent tight ends...

We do get penalized severely for allowing over thirty points......I appreciate the help........turnovers and sacks count .defensive tds interceptions, the normal scoring setup...
