I think the answer to this one is: It depends... it depends... it depends.
The only way I would use a defense as part of a deal is as a throw in to sweeten the pot.
For example, I have the Seahawks D and the Patriots D. If the other owner has the Cowboys D, I might trade him a Chad Johnson and Seahawks D for Tory Holt.
In this case, Tory Holt is supposedly worth more than Chad Johnson, but with the other team getting an upgrade at DEF, the deal becomes much more even.
If you ever trade a DEF straight up for a player, the defense should in the top 5 and the player should not be in the top 60 players. Something like that... you get the idea.
