Trade Rules

Postby madmike » Sat Nov 20, 2004 8:41 pm

Question: my league is made up of close friends and relatives. I commish the league and approve trades to keep things on the up and up. Our trading deadline is passed now so this question is for next year.

Once 2 guys traded even value in one week and then traded the same player back the next week. I let it slide but was wondering do you guys have any sort of rules around trading players back to same team. To me it feels like a loophole, borrowing a player for a week. Should that be banned in next years rules?

Hmm... that's kind of a tough one. I'd say ban it for next year. It's tough to allow that to happen because it forms an unfair advantage for the team for the week since it's just temporary for that week (if that makes sense).

I agree with kanez. I commish my league and two teams wanted to trade back after a week and I wouldn't allow it either.

This is basically cheating, two teams could "help each other out" throughout the season..... like if a kicker has a bye week, I'll loan you so and so for a kicker this week. It gives an unfair advantage to those two teams and is collusion, though probably not intentional. Our league has a rule that three weeks must pass before any player of one team can be traded back to the original team.

I had the same issue this season between a nephew and uncle in the league I commish, so I can understand the akward position you may feel you are in.
If the trade involves marginal value players, it doesn't make much difference. If there were a "heavy hitter" included in the swap, some other owner would almost surely object, and rightfully so.
The trade I mentioned above was a bye week fix for both teams, and I didn't make a fuss since: a) I didn't have a specific rule in place to address it, and b) no other owner questioned it.
I do feel there is an element of underhandedness in this type of transaction, and I intend to address it in '05.

i am a commish as well and caught wind of the same trade in our league. caught it early enough (1 of them played me) and told them there is no 1 week trades and if the games start with those players on their team then they are their players for the year. they magically went back to the orgional rosters..lol

this case has gone and passed. you have to stop it for next year

Change the rule for next season. A player can not be traded back to the same owner until after 5 games in my league. I was not able to acquire the RB formely know as A-Train while Jones was hurt cause I traded A-Train away to this owner just before Jones hot hurt :( The owner wanted to trade him back to me, and this might have cost me my season, but it's a good rule, and you should consider it. If you think that 5 is too much for you, go with what works for you.

Actually I would be able to trade for him this week, but no longer have to cause Jones is back :)

Thanks for all the feedback. In the case this year is was a low level RB but I want to nip this in the bud.

I'm going to go with 3 NFL games must pass before player can be traded back to same team.

i really don't like that rule, especially if it coincides with the trade dedline. i recently just traded for a player i traded away. but the thing is, it's not like it was the same trade. if 2 teams trade the exact players to each other, then i'd say it's bad, but if they maybe add in a player or players of value to make the trade different (so it doesn't look like colusion), then i'd say it's pretty fair
