Free statistics for a fantasy league?

Postby starrider » Sun Dec 12, 2004 2:41 pm

I'm not sure if this is the proper forum, but I am creating a keeper league and writing some custom software to help automate it. Does anyone know where I can get free box scores and statistics? I want to avoid having to scrape a site like CBS or ESPN (statistics are not copyrightable so it is legal to do that.)

I'm looking for something in an easy to digest format. Any ideas? :-?

That's not easily downloaded. I would have to clean up the page and get what I wanted. I'm really looking for like a text file or an xml file with just the data. Something similar to quickstats.com but free.

Check out http://sourceforge.net/projects/offl. Its open source, so you may be able to utilize the stat scrapeing code, or at least ask on the forumns there, as some one may know. Yahoo used to offer xml stats, but I dont think they do anymore.

what language are you writing your little "scraper" in?

you could probably easily get things off of the yahoo box - scores.

actually. try these things, off of nfl.com, they seem to be in fairly ok text format, you'd just have to get something to parse it, but you don't have to worry about all the flash stuff, but you do have to fight through some html tags.

Ideally, i do not want to write a scraper at all. I just want the data in a text or xml file.

Scrapers suck. You have to write them for a specific page, and if the format of the page changes, you have to change your code.

Does such data exist that is freely available?

well... there is this, but I am not sure how useful it will be.

i know a couple of people who run a fantasy site and they do buy there stats from somewhere.

It isn't all that hard, btw, to copy and paste stats into your favorite spreadsheet from either yahoo or cnnsi or wherever. I guess doing it roughly 16 times a week for 17 weeks can get somewhat annoying...

$55 for such a service actually isn't too bad, unless you really, really want a free league...
