Kickers and Defenses

Postby leavitator » Sat Sep 21, 2002 12:35 pm

I was wondering why a lot of people here who post choose to carry 2 defenses. I much prefer playing the matchups; for example, I drafted the San Diego defense to start the season as they were facing Cincinnati and Houston, and I have now dropped the SD defense and picked up Indy, as their next 3 games are Houston, Cincinnati, and Baltimore. I believe this is a much better way to score with your defenses.

Also, do you guys like sticking with one kicker throughout the year or playing the matchups (for instance, playing guys against weak defenses in domes)?

It all depends on the way the league is run.My 1 league has roster limits &no free pick-ups,so to drop & pick-up like that would cost $.In another one there's 4 free pickups then a charge after that.In these leagues it is common to carry 2 kickers & 2 D's for bye weeks.Save your $ for possible injury pick-ups is the norm.

Also,i have seen teams(in my leagues) go all year w/1 kicker.I have also seen some of these teams lose by 1 or 2 points on their kickers bye-week.I refuse to take a zero before the game even if it is a lowly kicker.

I think there are too many variables on any given week to say someone shouldnt be carrying 2 def.

I just added Den D to my roster. I already have the rams. I added Denver now because in week 4 they face the ravens and im hoping the ravens will struggle again to make points. So I grabbed Den before anyone else in my league thought to do it.

So normally I have one Def, but for this week and next I will have two.

I always carry 2 D's,I like to play the match-ups.FF has so many different rule formats that in some leagues,it's justifiable carrying 2.Rules such as how many picks in the draft, whats roster limit, what is the FA pick-up process, etc.

I feel it's more important to pick up 2 good defenses in the draft than it is to pick up 2 good QB's for one reason. That is the scoring for defense (at least in my leauges) is based on team stats rather than individuals. For example, I picked up both the Chicago Bears defense and the Philadelphia Eagles defense in my draft. Depending on the matchups I may start either one on any given week. You only need one good QB because if you have that one he'll produce just about every week. Defenses' fantasy stats tend to vary from week to week, even the good ones, so it's good to have 2 good ones and play the favorable matchup.

It also depends on the size of your league... In smaller leagues you don't really have to carry two defenses, since a decent one is usually available on the FA list. Now in 16-team leagues that I'm playing in, having two is recommended since people hoard them at first until they start sucking. When they have to give up a fairly good defense because their starting D had their bye and they need to get a RB or WR, then it becomes a good time to upgrade...

Yes, I told menyak about this problem in the Suggestions forum, but I can't duplicate this behavior readily. The workaround is to check the 'auto-login' box...
