I never really checked in with my doctor to verify if I really had insomnia, but for the longest time, I couldn't go to sleep. Anyone still remember the good 'ol 'Cuna-Post-a-Thon and "Donations for 'Cuna's Hooker"?
Anyway, eventually I got my hands on some sleeping pills that worked wonders. ...but now I have to take one or two an hour before I want to go to sleep to actually get some sleep. Probably not the best way to go about doing things, but it's worked for me.

ahh I remember something now. We had a class that had to do with good study habits and how to get the most out of your brain and whatnot. There was a part about sleeping. One method is to imagine you are walking down steps. You go down 1 step, take a deep breath and say "10" to yourself. Then repeat these steps all the way down to the bottom. Another method is one of those soothing sounds cds. We had a whole class listening to that cd with a pillow at our desk and while I didnt fall asleep, about 5 people did. Lastly, you picture a blank screen. You "write" a large 3, a slightly smaller 3, and a pretty big 3. Then you write an average 2, a slightly smaller 2, and a small 2. Then a very small 1, an even smaller 1, and finally a minute 1. It may seem wierd, but it has worked for me before. Good luck

I had a serious problem with insomnia for a while and I found a supplement called melatonin. you can find it at any rite-aid CVS type store and is all natural. It's actually the substance you're brain makes when it puts you to sleep.
I was very leary to taking these as I didn't want to become dependant but I bought a small bottle three years ago and still have some left. It helped me get into a sleeping routine for my job and I still use them every once in a while if i get stressed out.

Yeah surprisingly turkey contains that, it's what makes you so sleepy after you eat it.

I could have sworn they blamed the sleepiness on the Tryptophan that is in turkey...

Oh my bad I was thinking of serotonin.
serotonin, a remarkable chemical that acts as a calming agent in the brain and plays a role in sleep.
The melatonin is a great suggestion. Just make sure to start off with a low dosage and increase if needed. Your body already produces it so it might only need a little extra.
Also make sure you aren't exercising to late at night. That can keep you up as well.
