Direct Snap to Edgerrin James?

Postby The Lung » Tue Jan 18, 2005 8:44 pm

I'm surprised nobody mentioned this. Late in the Pats/Colts game on Sunday, Manning was doing his thing where he was pacing up and down the offensive line, calling audibles. Then the Colts direct snapped to Edgerrin James who ran for a ten yard gain and a first down!

Unfortunately, Manning had previously put his hands under center and was called for illegal motion, and the play was negated by penalty. But I still give props to arguably the most inventive idea since Bernie Kosar/Dan Marino's fake spike in 1994!

Yea, there's occasionally direct snaps to the running back, but the quarterback is usually under center. This occured when Manning was giving audibles and so the attention was all on him, and he was all the way down at the end of the offensive line. The Pats defense (and most fans) never saw it coming.

Yeah, I thought that was a cool idea.. too bad that it didn't work, because now defenses will be watching for it next year.

I don't know if it's every season or not...but this year's playoffs seem plagued by gimmick plays.

Actually it was like 7 yards, and NOT a first down....but it was tricky.

That was a great play. Not sure I like the rule that caused it to come back though. Once hands are under center you can only take them out to audible, not to trick the other team. Manning made the mistake of putting them under to start with but still...

I also saw the play...pretty sweet, caught me not paying attention to the Edge just as much as the Pats defense. Unfortunately it was the Colts best offensive play call all day.

I thoguth that it was the craziest thing all day. at frist I was really confused, but now I'm mad because of that motion rule, because it was very interesting. . . .
