JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Jan. 25, 2005) -- The Jacksonville Jaguars hired Southern California quarterbacks coach Carl Smith as offensive coordinator.
The 56-year-old Smith replaces Bill Musgrave, who was fired after the Jags finished last in the AFC and 29th in the league in scoring last season.
Musgrave was heavily criticized for not getting the most out of an offense that featured running back Fred Taylor, receiver Jimmy Smith and emerging quarterback Byron Leftwich. The team struggled all season in the red zone, on third downs and in short-yardage situations.
Smith, meanwhile, tutored Heisman Trophy quarterback Matt Leinart last season. He has been an offensive coordinator for 11 seasons in his career, which includes 12 years at the collegiate level, three in the USFL and 17 in the NFL.
Smith worked as an assistant coach with New Orleans (1986-96), New England (1997-99) and Cleveland (2001-03) before joining the Trojans.
"Carl Smith has a wealth of experience as an offensive coach and a coordinator, and he is a great addition to our staff," coach Jack Del Rio said.
