If They Retired Tomorrow...Who Makes The Hall Of Fame?

Postby Dr. Duran Duran » Wed Jan 26, 2005 5:01 pm

My friends and I were debating who would make the Hall of Fame if a player were to retire tomorrow. It's an interesting question because you have to only use the players current stats instead of "projected" stats. This is the list I came up with.

BUF- QB, Drew Bledsoe
BUF- DB, Troy Vincent
MIA- LB, Junior Seau
MIA- LB, Zach Thomas
NE- QB, Tom Brady
NE- RB, Corey Dillon
NE- PK, Adam Vinatieri
NE- DB, Ty Law
NYJ- C, Kevin Mawae
NYJ- QB, Curtis Martin

PIT- RB, Jerome Bettis
BAL- LB, Ray Lewis
BAL- DB, Deion Sanders
BAL- OT, Jonathan Ogden
CIN- OT, Willie Anderson

IND- QB, Peyton Manning
IND- WR, Marvin Harrison
TEN- PK, Gary Anderson
JAX- WR, Jimmy Smith

SD- FB, Lorenzo Neal
SD- QB, Doug Flutie (CFL)
KC- G, Wil Shields
KC- OT, Willie Roaf
KC- TE, Tony Gonzalez
DEN- DB, John Lynch

GB- QB, Brett Favre
MIN- WR, Randy Moss
MIN- PK, Morten Andersen
CHI- G, Ruben Brown

TB- DE, Simeon Rice
TB- LB, Derrick Brooks
TB- WR, Tim Brown

PHI- DB, Brian Dawkins
PHI- WR, Terrell Owens
DAL- G, Larry Allen
NYG- DE, Michael Strahan

ARZ- RB, Emmitt Smith
SEA- WR, Jerry Rice
SEA- OT, Walter Jones
SEA- LB, Chad Brown
STL- WR, Issac Bruce
STL- WR, Torry Holt
STL- OT, Orlando Pace
STL- RB, Marshall Faulk
STL- DB, Aeneas Williams

I wanted to put some young studs on the list like Daunte, Donovan, LT, Alexander and Ahman, but I just couldn't do it. Though many could make an arguement for any of them. Also, I wanted to put Vinny Testaverde on the list, but his numbers aren't consistent enough to make him Hall of Fame worthy. So what does the cafe think?

Interesting idea but too many people who haven't played long enough or haven't done enough in their time in the league to be considered. Holt, just to pick one example, simply hasn't played long enough. You have to set some reasonable standard for longevity. Holt projects great and should make it but not if he retired today, no way.

There are a ton of long shots on that list!

I too felt that way about Torry Holt, until I considered Gale Sayers. Sayers only played for seven years and truly only played for the first five seasons. His numbers were 991 carries for 4,956 yards and 39 TD's. In comparison, Holt has played for just six seasons and has accumulated 517 catches for 8,156 yards and 45 TD's. How can you say no way to Torry Holt?

True, but I felt they were worthy of mention. I'm guessing some of those players are Lorenzo Neal, Brian Dawkins and Troy Vincent types? Who did you think were longshots?

Willie Anderson
Torry Holt
Drew Bledsoe
Walter Jones

To name a few, but im not a real good judge of talent when it comes to linemen. I know there two of the best in the league but I didn't know about Hall of Fame.

I already explained my reasons for Holt earlier in this thread. I placed Walter Jones on the list because he's made five straight Pro-Bowls, but a longshot nonetheless. Same goes for Anderson. Now, Bledsoe makes for an interesting arguement. Looking at his career stats, he ranks in the top ten in passing yards, attempts and completions. He's less than 200 yards away from hitting the 40,000 yards passing milestone and has over 220 touchdown passes, ranking 17th all-time. Nonetheless, he too is a longshot even with the incredible numbers. Scary thought.

I'd narrow the list down to the following players:

DAL- G, Larry Allen
PIT- RB, Jerome Bettis
NE- QB, Tom Brady
TB- LB, Derrick Brooks
TB- WR, Tim Brown
STL- RB, Marshall Faulk
GB- QB, Brett Favre
IND -WR, Marvin Harrison

What?! No Morten or Gary Anderson? They are the most prolific scorers in NFL history and they didn't make your cut? Neither did 10-time Pro Bowlers Willie Roaf and Ruben Brown? Also, no Tony Gonzalez? Plenty of less prolific TE's have made the Hall of Fame! 8-o

At the first list, I dont think, right now at least that the following players would make it...

Bledsoe (lots of yards but lots of Ints as well)
Dillon (few more years and he will get in)
Vincent (on the bubble)
Dawkins (few more years)
Bruce (art monk hasnt been able to get in and he has more yards)
Smith (same reason as bruce, plus he has fewer TDs than monk)
