I think a lot of people picked the colts also.
If I recall the predictions forum closed before the games started, so the rash of Carolina injuries didn't get factored in. Back then, while the Eagles were favorites by the odds makers, a lot of people thought Minnesota and Seattle were likely picks to represent the NFC, mainly because they had supposedly upgraded their defenses.
On the AFC side, despite the Pats odds favorites, many people were calling the Colts and Chiefs to make it to the Superbowl. Coincidently, these teams as well had speculation of having defenses better than they actually were.
It is interesting to see how things changed. How so few people gave the Steelers or Chargers a snow ball's chance of winning their division, and yet next year they're likely to be the majority pick.
