Cardinals: Smith expected to retire during offseason

News
Cardinals' running back Emmitt Smith will retire during the offseason, according to ESPN reporters John Clayton and Chris Mortensen. A league source told Mortensen that Smith might make the announcement as soon as Thursday while in Jacksonville for the Super Bowl. Smith finished the 2004 season with 937 rushing yards and nine touchdowns.

Views
It might turn out that an earlier report which indicated that Smith was going to announce his retirement on Tuesday was just a couple days off. That same report also stated that the league's all-time rushing leader intends to join the investment group fronted by Arizona businessman Reggie Fowler, who is attempting to purchase the Vikings. Whether Smith is involved with Fowler's group remains to be seen.

One of the best RBs ever. Good career Emmitt. I also wish you could have sucked up the pride and not have gone to Arizona. Looking back he didn't get much out of it, but some money I suppose.

I wish Barry Sanders wouldn't have retired so we would have had more of a chance to debate which of them was better, but this thread isn't about Barry.

Nice career Emmitt. Enjoy retirement! I just wish you did it two years ago.

As opposed to Ricky Proehl, this 15-year veteran definitely deserves his own thread!

I heard Dan Patrick talking about this on ESPN Radio over lunch. He was conducting a poll to see if Emmitt is the greatest running back ever.

937 yards and 11 TDs in his rookie year
18355 rushing yards lifetime
164 rushing TDs, including 25 in one season! (1995)
11 1000-yard rushing seasons in a row
3224 receiving yards

What a career.

Congrats to Emmitt! You had one helluva career!

I wanted to reach through the TV and choke you the day you broke Peyton's record, but all records are meant to be broken. At least that's what they say.

Finally! Not that I want to see him go but it is long overdue since he went to Arizona. I dont want to see him hurt his legacy more. Great career, great guy, great accomplishments!

(Now if only Jerry would get the hint) :-?

Props to one of the greatest running backs of all time, it's finally his time to retire and he deserves it. Too bad he couldn't last one more season for those new unis though, he would've looked damn good in them. At least compared to Josh McCown or something.
