The truth about Joey, by Marty Mornhenweg

Postby moochman » Fri Feb 04, 2005 2:12 pm

Former Lions coach Marty Mornhenweg said on WRIF radio this morning the he didn't want to draft Joey Harrington in 2002. He said he felt that #2 was too high to draft Bloey and the team had too many holes to fill. He said that he wanted to either trade down for more picks or take Quentin Jammer. Harrington came in third on his list. This is the first time anyone associated with the Lions has publiclly come out against the drafting of the lame Duck QB. Sorry, should read-Oregon Duck QB.

I found it refreshing to hear a person give his opinion without attempting to trash someone or without trying to be PC.

Funny how things work. If the Lions don't draft Bloey, they go with McMahon who sucks. But this would mean that they would have been free to pick up a vet QB last year or now because they wouldn't have the boatload of cash tied up in a still unproven QB.

I wonder if the drafting of Bloey turns out to be the reason that a team that looks to be ready to make a serious push to contention instead continues to lose games they should win because og poor QB play.

This is the Lions we are talking about. I wonder to myself when you hear people talk about how good Millen has drafted at least over the last few years. To me he has been horrible and should have been canned when Marty was. But because we hired Mooch for some reason its almost a free pass at an extra year or two for Matt. I would have loved to have traded down and taken Jammer instead of Joey. I would also have like the Lions to have taken Andre Johnson over Collarbone Rogers. As a Lions fan i wish that Ford would just sell the team already, until then the Leos will go nowhere.

There are so many people who overrate QB's in the NFl draft. they're very important, but some people think that if their team doesn't have a Peyton Manning-like QB, they'll be a failure and never make it into the playoffs. Yes, the lions had many other holes to fill, and peobably could ahve done just as well with their previous QB than with Joey Bloey. They should have taken Quentin Jammer IMO.

if this is what Marty says, then we should do the exact opposite. Seriously. I stopped listening to him the day he chose to kick in O.T.

LOL, when did that happen? I'm guessing the Lions lost that game.

It was argueably the most bone-headed move ever made by a Lions coach. DaBears had just driven down the field on a tired and ineffective Leos D to score and tie the game. Mornhenweg won the coin toss for OT and decided to take the wind instead of the ball. Of course DaBears marched 30 or 40 yards to get into FG range and booted the game winner into the wind. Classic. I think it may have been the inspiration for the Brilliant! ad campainge.
