Brian Mitchell Retires...Hall of Famer?

Postby Dr. Duran Duran » Fri Feb 11, 2005 3:44 pm

The NFL's all-time combined kick returns leader is calling it a game. As the NFL's greatest return man ever, does he belong in the Hall?

As far as I'm concerned, being the best at what you do should give you access to the Hall. 9 records ain't too shabby either.. I especially like the "most fair catches" one. ;-D

Its really hard for special teamers to get into the hall. He has a really good chance since he never played for the cowboys though(sorry had to throw that in). He was the best at what he did, i just dont see it happening.

Wow,I didn't even know Brian Mitchell was still playing!I agree that the best at any and every position should get a spot in the hall, but alot really depends on who is going to be going that year as well.He may not get the votes if more popular players(and positions)are being inducted that year.

Brian Mitchell should get in before Micheal Irvin.

I believe he will get in, just not first-ballot. The league now puts a premium on kick returners (Dante Hall, etc) and Mitchell was the best for a long time and contributed in other ways as well. It'll be an interesting debate but if kickers can make the Hall then I think KRs should have a shot too.

Yeah, but you know Irvin has the name and the status of being on the "Dynasty" Cowboys,so he'll likely get in first. But I agree,Mitchell was the superior football player.

I doubt Dave Meggett will ever get in, and he was pretty good at kick returns. :-/

Mitchell, sure, I'd throw him in there. Just with all these other previous HOF arguments, it's all about changing the way the game is played or being the best at your position. Being a dangerous kick returner can be just as helpful as a running back or QB. He can get you good field position or even put points up on the board.

The only argument against it is that you have to have a little bit of luck with the blocking and such, but if you know what you're doing and could turn a no-gain situation into a 20 yard gain, that's pretty good.

Did Steve Tasker get into the HOF...I want to say that he did. He was supposedly the best special teamer ever, so why not Mitchell?
