Smith signs with TB

Postby Sixxgunn » Fri Feb 18, 2005 1:20 pm

As reported by SportingNews.com:

UPDATED: FEBRUARY 18, 11:55 A.M.
Akili Smith - QB, Green Bay Packers

Smith has signed with the Buccaneers. Cincinnati selected Smith third overall in the 1999 draft, but it didn't take long for him to flop. He has not played in an NFL game since 2002 and hasn't started multiple games in a season since 2000.
Fantasy Source spin: Tampa Bay is looking to restructure Brian Griese's deal, and bring him back as the starter. Smith's addition could give the Bucs some leverage in those talks. Chris Simms is entrenched as the backup, so Smith's best chance is to make the team as a No. 3 QB. (Rob Hurtt/TSN)

Does anyone care? How does Akili Smith give them any leverage in talks with Griese?

Of course it does... Griese must be shaking in his boots right now... very afraid...

Actually, this is no suprise. Anyone remember last year (maybe 2) when Tampa had 5 QBs on their roster going into training camp, and weeded them out to three? Look for another small fry to sign with Tampa too, and the top three QBs who preformed well in camp will stay on.

Does look like Brad Johnson is outta there, though.

Good to see him get yet another shot. He's going to be allocated to NFL Europe for those that want to get a glimpse of him.

Pretty good move. Can't hurt to have him as an option. I agree that it pretty much seals Brad Johnson's departure unless Griese runs first.

Wow I am sure he can make it in the NFL this time, NOT.

Also they will be getting rid of B. Johnson, its a fact he is ild expensive and they dont want to play him

This move isn't an all important one, but it makes sense.

They're most likely letting Johnson go and signing Griese. Now, Griese is getting up there, Simms seems to have never panned out, so it'd be nice to have another veteran who at least has some experience to add depth. Either way, if Akili gets game time, it does not bode well for Tampa's season.
