Claerett, Williams Overrated

Postby Bennett4prez » Fri Feb 25, 2005 12:03 pm

Look for running back Maurice Clarett and wide receiver Mike Williams to come overpriced on Draft Day. Contrary to popular opinion, the scouting combine is no longer as valuable of a barometer of talent as it used to be, especially in the case of NCAA-removed players such as Clarett and Williams. After so many seasons with the system, many players know exactly what will be asked of them, what tricks they need to work on, and how to present themselves on the field. Given the extra year(s) Clarett and Williams have had and they should have a VERY good showing at the combine. Just don't let it get to your head that these guys are "the real deal". They have just spent the last couple years of their lives perfecting the scouting combine drills.

I can't possibily see how Clarett is overrated... after all of his "incidents," and his being overweight last combine anyway, not much is expected of Maurice. He's likely to go around the 4th... and when you think about it, for a guy who carried Ohio on his back to the national championship, that's low.

Willliams could be overrated, but with his excellent height, athletic body and overall phenominal skills... I can't see this guy as a bust. It could happen though.

As long as he's drafted by a team who doesn't need him to perform right away, he could turn out all right. We'll see if his attitude has really changed. Humble pie...

My opinions on these guys were formed by watching them play football, not how they perform in the combine.

Clarett, as mentioned, carried his team to a national championship as a freshman and I believe he is going to be a serious steal for whoever picks him up.

Mike Williams was the most dominating college receiver I have seen since watching Randy Moss single handedly destroy Louisville in a Motor City bowl. I have been waiting to draft this guy for 2 years now in a dynasty, and he better not wind up on the bleepin Redskins :-P

Hear hear! Perhaps Mike will fall to 11... ? (probably not, but man would that be awesome... Bledsoe's value would skyrocket)

I see Mike Williams being drafted by the Vikings at number 7 if/when the Moss deal goes through. Although if somehow Derrick Johnson should slip to 7 the Vikes would jump on him IMO. Then I think Williams would go indeed to the Deadskins

My hope, and also another possibility: Philly trades up, using Cory Simon to sweeten the deal, and take Mike Williams.

That would be sweet for Williams.
